How Should Americans Feel About Obama's Decision to Cover Georgetown U's IHS symbol?

I do not consider myself to be a closed-minded religious person by any means (I guess no one really would...unless they were being brutally honest with themselves so maybe I am wrong...I guess you guys can decide for yourselves!) but I feel that it was extremely disrespectful for the president to request that Georgetown cover their IHS symbol during his speech. It is amazing to me that our president can happily tell nations all over the world that their beliefs and customs are to be respected, but in his home country, at a CATHOLIC university, he cannot bear the thought of a Christian symbol being shown on the television behind him. Now, a lot of people have said that it is because he is 'the anti-Christ' or he is a pharisee just like the ones in the Bible, but that is not my argument at all. The president showed a blatant disregard for the religious beliefs of people in his own nation...a nation where freedoms of all sorts are supposed to be granted. The argument was that non-Christans would be offended if the president allowed a religious symbol to be shown during one of his speeches, but I think it would be dumb for them to be shocked in the first place. Obviously, Georgetown is a religious school...anyone who knows that should be pretty lenient on them for having a religious symbol on their campus. If he wanted a neutral environment, he should have chosen to give his speech outside the university...not in a room decorated with symbols of their beliefs.

Another lovely faux pas our president made was to include a quotation from Christ's Sermon on the Mount in his speech...I would assume as a nod to the setting in which he was giving it. Unfortunately, he used this scripture completely out of context and it lost all religious value as soon as he said it. By referring to his "economic stimulus package" as the 'rock' on which to build our nation and its economy, he basically removed all relevance to God and to the Bible. The rock as referred to in context is Christ, not a stimulus package which may or may not benefit the economy in the long run.

I guess it is apparent that I am a Christian myself, but my attempt in this blog was to see this issue from a universal point of view. If he were to have a speech in a Jewish setting, would he request that any visible stars of David be covered? Outside of religion...if he were to speak at a Gay pride celebration (as argued by Washington Post journalist Brad Hirschfield) would he request that all rainbows be removed? How is hiding one's beliefs, religious or otherwise, American at all?

That is sad...

We really are retarded, lol.

First, Notre Dame comes under fire for inviting Obama to speak at its commencement, because Obama's Protestant (even though there has only been one Catholic President ever... and he was only 1 of 5 others invited to give Notre Dame's commencement speach). And now this.

I agree with you. If I were going to give any sort of speach at a known Catholic (or any other religious) institution, I wouldn't ask that their symbols be taken down. That's stupid. If you don't want the symbols to show - pick a spot that doesn't have symbols... or an institution that wasn't built on the meaning behind those symbols.

Yes the idea of this is unsettling. I just read an article where a comment was posted that essentially said if it wasn't covered Obama would be standing at the podium which is directly under the sign, and that an image of him standing under the name of Christ (interesting, I'd never heard of IHS) that from a photojournalism pov it would be weird and kind of like Obama is Christ or the head of Christ or something slightly weird like that...and that the media would have 'gone into a frenzy'... I dont know if that would really be a valid concern, I'd like to see an uncovered image of it. Anyway, we know he's Christian and he drew from Christ's Sermon on the Mount during this speech. He shouldn't infringe on the sentiments the university is based on, but perhaps it would have ostracized or alienated people of other faiths... of course all of that reasoning doesn't explain why they didnt chose another location... but i suspect there MUST have been a reason for that because it seems too OBVIOUS a solution for them to have just overlooked/ignored
