Lucky dogs... If stem cell research can be brought to the forefront... what about another proven viable medical practice? Ozone Therapy.
Topic: How Ozone is believed to fight cancer
There are three key discoveries that explain why ozone helps to fight cancer. First, cancer arises because of a lack of oxygen to the cells (Warburg). Second, cancer has a viral component (Watson). Third, the growth of select tumors is inhibited by ozone (Varro). Ozone is a misunderstood disinfectant. Ozone therapy is a neglected treatment that can effectively fight cancer. Ozone is an effective immunoregulator that kills pathogens, mitigates infection, detoxifies the body, increases circulation and oxygen levels, combats fatigue. These are made possible by it's unique chemical properties, high energy state, instability, and rate of reaction.
Ozone is therapeutic. Cancer causes fatigue, imbalances the immune system (the core of our health defenses), and robs healthy cells of resources. During cancer the immune system falls victim and is compromised as it works over time to kill the pathogens in the body and to fight infection. McKinney says, "The most critical support NDs can offer is to help the patient's immune system...the immune system's mandate is to protect and repair our own tissues, and attack everything else. Cancer cells...summon(s) immune cells bent on repairing the tumor. However, the immune system cannot fix the genetic damage in the cancer cells, and the cancer cells won't switch off as they should, so it becomes "the would that will not heal". The immune cells increase blood supply, release growth factors, and even switch off the immune cells that approach the tumor in attack mode. The immune system is...working for the tumor and not for the greater good of the organism." Ozone can kill some of those pathogens, giving the immune system much needed back up. Ozone regulates the immune system by calming an overactive immune system plagued by an auto-immune disease, as well as stimulate and support an under active immune that has been hit by any number of chronic illnesses from cancer to AIDS. An unfettered immune system has the highest likelihood of recognizing and fighting cancer cells effectively. Therefore, if ozone can help support the immune system, then it helps fight cancer in a significant way. Ozone fights cancer by combating fatigue, providing your body with added energy. Dr. Frank Shallenberger says that ozone, "accelerate(s) the citric acid cycle, which is the main cycle for the liberation of energy from sugars. This then stimulates basic metabolism. It also breaks down proteins, carbohydrates, and fats to be used as energy" (2). It also detoxifies the body by moving waste out. Oxygen is the second most electronegative element therefore it can bond with and oxidize any other element except the noble gases and fluorine, which is the only more electronegative element (6). Ozone can increase circulation because gas expands to fill its container such as the bloodstream, or the body. Due to kinetic energy, ozone gas diffuses through the body rapidly, moving from high concentration to lower concentrations, carrying oxygen throughout the body via the bloodstream. Other benefits include increasing the oxygen levels, purifying the blood and the water the body is primarily made up of. Ozone therapy has proved beneficial in conjunction with conventional methods. A study from several hospitals in Spain of the effects of ozone therapy on 19 patients with advanced head and neck tumors (H&N) was conducted over a three year period while the patients were undergoing radiation therapy concurrently. The trial concluded with positive results. "Ozonetherapy has proved useful in the treatment of ischemic syndromes, and several studies have described a potential increase of oxygenation in tissues and tumors. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the clinical effect of ozonetherapy in patients with advanced H&N cancer in the course of their scheduled radiotherapy" (7). Dr. Robert H. Sorge founder of Abunda Life Health Retreat and Clinic contends that ozone stimulates the production of white blood cells, inhibits the growth of new tumors (anti-neoplastic), increases red blood cell membrane dispensability, flexibility, and effectiveness, increases the efficiency of the antioxidant enzyme system, speeds the healing process, kills worms, amoeba, and parasites, enhances brain function, extends the life of the cell, and helps increase endurance (5).
The discoveries of Warburg, Watson, and Varro were integral to developing a regime for ozone to fight cancer. However, ozone therapy continues to be among several neglected, yet effective therapies. It's abilities to successfully regulate the immune system, kill pathogens, mitigate infection, detoxify the body, increase circulation and oxygen levels, and combat fatigue is due to it's unique chemical properties, high energy state, instability, and rate of reaction. Hopefully, soon this therapy will be further observed in theory, experiment, and practice.

It's ok though, I was very skeptical at first. The FDA is not the end all be all judgment on medical practices, even if that's job title. I'm sure there are a myriad of therapies (many of which are alternative) that they dont promote. But is this because of ulterior motives, like money? I dont have a definitive answer on that, but I can image, and wouldn't be surprised.
But really, this isn't about the FDA this is about Ozone Therapy, and its potential to save lives. If there is one person (in fact there millions) who has be positively effected by this treatment. Then mock the lack of research? That fault doesn't lie with Ozone therapy, its lies with orgs like the FDA which make research for it difficult. But I am encouraged that if stem cell research as been encouraged, then one day ozone therapy will too. Let's hope we dont loose too many in the waiting.
As far as ozone being "toxic", tropospheric ozone can be harmful to the epithelial tissues in our lungs, however, no ozone need come in contact with the respiratory tract for this therapy to be effective.

...and I am unimpressed. Your first link refers to a supposed 1980 "study" that was performed by the German Medical Society for Ozone Therapy, but which (mysteriously) cannot be found online, and which does not appear to have ever been published in a respected, peer-reviewed journal. But hey, I figured that an almost thirty-year-old "study" might not have made it into any of the modern, online journals (an unfortunate reality of the current state of medical literature), so I decided to look up the organization you cited and see what they had to say for themselves. As it turns out, the GMSfO is an advocacy group for "therapists" that are currently practicing ozone therapy. I also discovered that the original 1980 report, i.e. "Adverse Effects and Typical Complications In Ozone Therapy" did not refer to a "trial" at all. In fact, this was a questionaire sent to only to members of the same Medical Society for Ozone Therapy, asking them to report any adverse effects that they had noted in during their "treatments." But hey, I STILL tried to give the GMSfO a fair shake, until I found on their own website where they admit that, "no placebo-controlled double blind studies have been carried out as yet." (LINK)
Then, I turned to your alternative journal source, eCAM. I was temped to tell you to stop being lazy and provide the sources that you claimed existed. But, I must be getting soft, because I took the time to review the journal for any relevant articles. I found exactly three. When viewed together, these studies are unimpressive. The sample sizes are extremely smalle (18 subjects, 7 subjects and 12 subjects respectively), and all of the subjects were receiving the normal radiological treatments that were appropriate to their conditions, which of course make any benefit being attributed to the ozone therapy questionable, at best. And not surprisingly, all three studies were funded, performed and published by the same small groups of ozone therapy practitioners in a single hospital, located in the Canary Islands. (LINK, LINK, LINK) The largest of these studies noted that, "no statistically significant change was observed in the tumor oxygenation in the 18 patients," and the BEST thing that any of the have to say is that, "many aspects regarding the bio-medical application of ozone therapy remain unexplored" and that further research is "warranted" (which really isn't true, but hey...there's always more room for new research, so knock yourselves out).
If you want people to take this shit seriously, then you need to find a REAL clinical trial, performed independantly and published in a major, credible peer-reviewed journal, and preferably one that has a sufficient pool of subjects to make solid observations, and even better one that has been replicated by multiple researchers, rather than just tossed around inside of the network of practicing ozone-hucksters.
One of the reasons why the practitioners of "alternative medicine" catch so much flack is that most medical practitioners are highly skeptical of people who claim to have special knowledge of "cures," but who seem either unable or simply unwilling to back up their claims with good, solid research. In other words, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and QUACKS like a duck, its probably a duck.

"Hyperoxygenation" Therapies
"Hyperoxygenation" therapy -- also called "bio-oxidative therapy" and "oxidative therapy" -- is based on the erroneous concept that cancer is caused by oxygen deficiency and can be cured by exposing cancer cells to more oxygen than they can tolerate. The most touted agents are hydrogen peroxide, germanium sesquioxide, and ozone. Although these compounds have been the subject of legitimate research, there is little or no evidence that they are effective for the treatment of any serious disease, and each has demonstrated potential for harm [30]. Germanium products have caused irreversible kidney damage and death [31]. The FDA has banned their importation and seized products from several U.S. manufacturers.
Q: Can Oxygen Cure Cancer?
I have heard that disease cannot live in the presence of oxygen. Is this true? If so, can oxygen therapy be used to treat cancer?
A : Answer (Published 1/5/2004)
Oxygen therapy is being promoted on the Internet as a treatment for cancer, but there is no evidence that it works. The notion that oxygen might destroy cancer cells goes back to the 1930s when Otto Warburg, MD, a Nobel Prize winner, discovered that compared to normal cells, cancer cells have a low respiration rate. He proposed that if cancer cells survive and grow in a low oxygen environment, they would die off if exposed to higher levels of oxygen. Since then, we've learned that Dr. Warburg was wrong. Oxygen doesn't slow cancer growth - tumors grow rapidly in tissues well supplied with oxygenated blood and the opposite is true, too: depriving tumors of oxygen doesn't stimulate their growth. Moreover, a study published in the Spring/Summer 1998 issue of Scientific Review of Alternative Medicine noted that since human tissues require 200 to 250 ml of oxygen per minute, an additional 20 ml that could be dissolved in all of the plasma of a normal weight adult would hardly be enough to make a difference in the amount of oxygen cancer cells would receive.
Science doesn't have "viewpoints." Either the data supports your claims, or it does not.

I did too, bc before I began researching this therapy I had my 2nd grade memories of talking about the ozone layer, and how ozone was bad. I didnt have much actual facts about it, I just got the feeling it was dangerous. (and partially this is due to the fact that scientists measure the amount of smog in the air by the amount of ozone present that is breaking down the nitrogen and sulfur oxides and other trace toxins-- that can be very confusing to the general public) And ozone can be dangerous, if in the wrong hands. I think 'I'd trust a scalpel in the hands of a surgeon, but not just anybody. or a gun in the hands of a marksman, but not in the hand of several progressiveU staffers" Ozone may be harmful to the epithelial tissues in the lungs if they are exposed to it on a constant basis. fortunately, the myriad of administration methods for this therapy dont require exposure to the respiratory tract to be effective.
Furthermore, chemo and radiation DEFINITELY wear on the immune system, this is hardly disputed. when the immune system is not at its best it has a hard time recognizing the cancer cells, and often time defends them against other cells trying to attack them (you can check the references listed at http://www.progressiveu.org/blog/51624-ozone-therapy-key-foundation). Ozone, in the millions around the world that have been using this practice for a century+, can SUPPORT THE IMMUNE SYSTEM by killing pathogens, fighting infection, and giving the immune system a much needed back up support. Ozone therapy may also be beneficial to use concurrently with other 'conventional' treatments such as it proved to be with radiation over a 3 year period of study in Spain with 19 patients- a notably small group, but improving the life of even one patient is significant, just as that patient!!- (this study is also listed in those references) ITS TAG TEAM BABY!!

Ozone, flouride, and radiation are all potentially harmful and used in health care. So it would appear to me that neither the FDA nor ADA are perfect institutions to go without question. I think it's great that you are discussing this. I think rather than us arguing with you about this, we should look at the facts and report back on them.
I find that this site seems to often be about battle blogging, rather than discussions to get independent thought stimulated.
I will be checking up on all these things, being that science is often over my head, and see if I can add, rather than just ramble on.

This may be a bit off topic. I have a friend that has recently been successfully treated for cancer with a more advanced form of radiation therapy called 'Proton Therapy'. This is one of the fastest growing treatments because of the high success rate and lower degree of side effects. The radiation can be very precisely directed to destroy cancerous growths and leave surrounding tissue untouched.

I've spent weeks researching ozone therapy, and quite frankly, right now, I'm SPENT! So I'm a take a lil time before i get a chance to give proton therapy it's fair research shake. But I do appreciated you bringing it to my knowledge.
Interestingly enuff, a friend purchased me a bottle of Nestle Pure Life Natural Spring Water today (even though I asked for tap). By chance, I skimmed over the label and ran across something i wasn't suspecting:
