Where are all the Scholarships?

I know someone who is mentally ill and I’ve been helping him to find scholarships. He needs one that can be used for part time study. I was looking at the scholarship section for the mentally ill and it seems to me that there are hardly any. I have looked everywhere both online and in print or so it seems to me that I have. I have found only one scholarship and that covers only brick and mortar institutions, and full time study. My friend would like to study online, he figures that is the best way to get to all of his doctor’s appointments and still get to go to school. I keep wondering why the scholarship covers only full time study and that too at a brick and mortar institution. I would think that some mentally ill people would need to go part time in order to take care of their health. I would also think that some mentally ill people, depending on what the illness is perhaps would not find it easy to attend a brick and mortar place with other people. I do know some people who have a hard time being around other people. I am no expert at mental health but it seems as though it is not that these people hate humankind, but that they may lack social skills, or possibly have an illness which makes it difficult to associate with others. It isn’t easy to be mentally ill and most of the people I know don’t seem to get paid very much – not enough to save up for college, the lack of scholarships or the seeming lack of scholarships would I think make it difficult or nearly impossible for a mentally ill person to go to college (or graduate school as my friend is trying to do): It seems to me that it is The evaporation of a dream.

If you're having trouble finding scholarships for mental illnesses you could always try for scholarships based on things like financial need, academic achievement, or a particular area of study. Or narrow down your search to a specific mental illness, though I am pretty sure "mental illness" and "Developmental disability" are both options you can check in a fastweb search.

I don't know if NAMI offers an academic scholarship, but they do have a webpage dedicated to giving people with mental illnesses college advice.

Most brick and mortar schools still offer online courses and programs. Especially at the graduate school level, where many students also have full time jobs. If the only scholarship you can find is for a physical school, maybe don't throw out an option just because it's not the first choice.
