I read an interesting article from the Los Angeles Times the other day titled, “The Simple Tool That Saves Women’s Lives.” This article by, Ranit Mishori, discusses a new innovation that is saving African women’s lives. Thousands of Americans have helped to produce and give solar cookers to refugee women in Chad. These are the women/camps that fled the genocide in Darfur.
Solar cookers not only provide the women with a way to cook food, but they also save lives by not forcing them to leave the refugee camps in search of firewood. When women and children leave the safety of the camps, they are “particularly vulnerable to attack and rape when they are out getting wood,” says Rachel Andres. This is such a sad unfortunate truth
:(
Who knew that such a simple innovation could have such great impacts on life? Although food preparation takes longer and cannot be done on cloudy or windy days, it proves to be more beneficial than an oven or fire. With solar cookers, the women have more time to look after their children, learn new things, or take care of themselves. The cookers allow women to boil water and kill off any water-borne bacteria and diseases.
Every little bit we can do to help out other people is greatly appreciated in my book. I believe if every person does a little bit, we can achieve so much for humanity. Thank you so much to everyone that spends their time and money to help others!!!
