Prostitution: Job or Hobby?!
In today's news writing class we tuned into current.com where we watched a video on young teen age girls prostituting. It talks about how drug dealers go from selling drugs to selling teenagers. The girls in the video started at such a young age, such as 10 years old. WHAT?! I WAS STILL PLAYING WITH BARBIE AND KEN!!! Some facts that we stated in video:

* A teenage girl being a prostitute could make up to $5,800 a day tax free just for being healthy.
What kind of stuff is that?! Talk about sick.
Its such a shame that the youth community gets pulled into something such as this looking for money or love. Why did some girl in the video say that some men don't like to wear condoms its something that you don't want to do but it is a part of life. WHOA!!! HOLD UP!!! PROSTITUTION is not a part of life its something that you put into your life. But the true question is has prostitution become a job or a hobby in today's modern world?! A girl name Aisha in the video make prostitution seem like it is a job because she explained how you can make $500 in a day prostituting then actually working and making $500 every 2 weeks. Another girl named Ashley, 14 made it seem like it was a hobby, where she enjoyed putting on clothing that will get her attention from the male population. In the video it illustrated how the young girls put advertisements on craigslist. I THOUGHT CRAIGSLIST WAS USED TO FIND A JOB, CAR, OR OTHER NEEDS!!! Who would have thought you could sale your body on classifieds. Whats your take on this issue?!

........... all i got to say is, wow, actually prostituion is looked at as a job/hobby because some girls (and guys as well, yes there are male prosititutes) find it easy and exciting. i should know because I used to be a prostitute, maybe not to make money but i did it to get a place to sleep when i was just floating about in the world cause i had now where to go. Its not something I'm proud of but I recognize the reason WHY it happened. when i was 17 i had my heart broken and began sleeping around w/ whoever gave me attention and was cute enough to make-out with. later just to stay the night and have a bed and blanket i would "convince" the person i was with to keep me for the night. luckily 15 months ago i changed theses habits by entering into a spanish/christian recovery home for women where i stayed w/ actual drug addicts, prostiutes, gangsters, hurting moms, etc.. the more i got closer to these lost souls the more i found out WHY they did what they did. some who used to sell their bodies did it for easy money, others who were sexually abused as little girls turn to desperation for that fatherly love and think that they can get by sex, others because of low self-esteem and have sex to feel attractive. there's no set reason for why women who prostitute themselves do so but all we can do is hope that someday they will learn there is something more than having to give themselves up for a lie they heard in their broken heart that giving sex to have what they want is okay. to be honest, that lie is from Satan himself who is real and theses girls who do what they do are involuntary puppets in the devil's scheme to bring down the woman figure in todays world: if your smart you'll get a job as a nurse, lawyer, doctor or teacher, if your stupid and good for only sex slap on a mini-skirt and hit the streets.
Job or Hobby or Crime
Being libertarian on a lot of issues I have some problems with the laws that criminalize prostitution. I'd prefer to see it legal and regulated.
But beyond the fact that prostitution is illegal, sex with underage girls and particularly selling sex with underage girls is a pretty serious and dispicable crime.
I'm kind of a hardass. If I were in charge and benevolent dictator, I'd pack the girls off to reform school or somewhere else in the juvenile system that separated them from their irresponsible parents. And I would litteraly flog the hide off the pimps and the johns. They would not survive it.
The range in that post from being 'Being libertarian on a lot of issues' to 'I would litteraly flog the hide off the pimps and the johns' is illustrative of why we humans have such a hard time putting together a good system of government. The 'benevolent dictator' lurks in every heart, and once appointed nearly every time dictator becomes the focus of our rulers efforts, while benevolent is forgotten too soon.
I don't think I have ever seen a better argument for term limits for every government post especially those that are not elected. While we are at it how about an expiration date on every law?
How about legalizing every victimless crime? Pimps and child prostitutes thrive where prohibition creates a black market, not where it is legal and regulated.

I can totally go along with legalizing prostitution.
But child and underage prostitution is not victimless. People who take advantage of kids deserve the harshest sort of treatment.
The country probably is better off that I am not dictator because while there would be a lot less things that were illegal under my rule, those few things that were illegal would generally result in a death sentence. I don't have a very high opinion of humanity in general and I would have no qualms about eliminating the criminals who commit crimes that have victims from society and the gene pool.
I guess technically it's a job, since you get paid for it. I find prostitutes more respectable than ladies (and guys, too) who go around having promiscuous sex for free. Not to say I condone prostitution. I don't.
Obviously, poor economic situations might force young kids into stuff like this, but their education, bringing up, and our overly sexualized culture probably also have their roles. The solution? Well, of course I don't have one. But I'm sure that better schools, better parents, better personal judgment and self esteem would help.
Great topic, TiDouble. This is something that is shocking to most in what we call "civilization" and needs more attention.
