Slots in MD?

Before the November election of this past year a large debate was brewing amongst many Marylanders on whether to vote for or against question number two on the ballot. Many questions have been raised from both sides of the argument. Will gambling have a positive effect on the local economy or will people find themselves spending what they don’t have during these traumatic economic times? Also will slots contribute to an increase in gambling addictions in Maryland if they are established? These questions can be debated by both sides of the argument. However, it appears in this situation that the pros of this plan to install slot machines throughout Maryland outweigh the cons.
In an article from the Community Times, which is a local paper in Maryland, it mentions all of the negatives of slots. What the editor failed to realize is that many of these arguments can be easily refuted. Lots of anti slot supporters believe that it just simply isn’t cost effective to implement slots and that budget cuts can simply support the areas that are now lacking in founding. One must look further into the situation to gain a better understanding, it will be expensive at first however a couple of years down the road the profit could quite possibly outweigh the costs. Then there is the argument that people aren’t spending money right now because of the economy, like the previous statement its one of those things that has to waited out because the economy will eventually get better. Another major question that is being raised is the question of gambling addictions, but when it comes down to it its like many other problems. Its in the hands of the beholder, it is about having self control and willingness to obtain help for oneself.
It may take time for the slots to be put into place, especially with the recent issues on biding for the slots, but it takes time for all the kinks to be worked out. In a couple of years down the line slots could bring in a good size profit that would ensure founding for Maryland’s public schools. It appears that slots could possibly help the lack of revenue that the state is generating. Perhaps anti slot groups should just ride it out and see what the future brings, if what was promised is brought then it should surely help Maryland’s education system flourish.

Perhaps the biggest problem with new gambling laws will be the unforeseen consequences. Slot machines were recently legalized in Pennsylvania by Gov. Rendell (curse his name), and they were supposed to be closely watched by the state and provide tons of tax revenue. But, it turns out that corruption and scandal marred casino license applicants again and again and again.

There's also the problem of where to build casinos. Every casino building permit granted in PA so far has been met with fierce opposition from residents. While I personally oppose gambling, it turns out that the little problems are derailing this process in my state even more so than the "big picture" problems.
