So I was reading a recent blog called the other side of the ocean and while I agree wholeheartedly with the issuses that were brought up, there's a lot more to be said on the subject of child abductions.
First of all, it should be known that a lot of the children that go missing are often taking by family members in custody battles or personal family feuds. They are never physically harmed or subjected to physical torture. Of course, the emotional and psychological effects may be another story and vary by case.
Unfortunately, however, there are millions of children worldwide that are kidnapped, tricked or sold into domestic or sexual slavery. Furthermore, missing children-- rather kidnapped, sold, kicked out or run aways-- will almost always cross the paths of some type of sexual predator. The really sad part is that most of these people will never be captured and when they are, there is very little the justice system can do. It is 99% accepted by psychologists that pedophiles are incurable and unchangeable (sp?). Even when they enter therapy or 'rehabilitation' type programs, the thoughts and urges are still there, kind of like an alcoholic. And really, it's no fault of their own. Most pedophiles were abused as children, and you have to admit that it's eaiser for an alcoholic to stay away from alcohol than it is to stay away from seeing a child for the rest of your life.
I said all of this not to defend pedophiles, but to ask: what are we supposed to do about them? How are we supposed to stop them from harming our children-- from stealing innocence and possibly creating another generation of depravity? At one point, it was argued that all (male) pedophiles should be castrated. In the 1800's, they were sometimes labotomized. Do these procedures violate their rights, or have they given up their rights by commitng the worse deed possible in civilized society? It's easy to condemn a person for their actions, but when it comes down to it, are we ready to make these decisions, to pass the laws and possible alienate and dehumanize a (albeit shameful and unwanted) sector of society? Then there are the new female predators that have popped up. What are we supposed to do about them?
