Is He Really President?

dannysrider's picture

Today, January 20, 2009, Barrack H. Obama took the oath to become president of the United States. But, is he really officially the president? In front of two million people the chief justice delivered the oath of presidency to Obama. There is some concern about the validity of this oath, however. Obama accidentally cut off the justice right at the beginning of the process. But then, the chief of justice screwed up the wording of the oath. Apparently the word, “faithfully,” was pronounced at the wrong point in the oath. It appears that Obama caught the justice’s slip, but it appeared on TV like Obama forgot what to say next. He instantly composed himself and continued magnificently.

Critics are now wondering if this will jeopardize Obama’s inauguration. Will he have to
take the oath again because of the chief justice’s misplaced words? They are also saying
that the administration will probably try to do redo the faux pas behind the closed
doors of the White House in order to keep it out of the public’s eye. What does this mean
for the new president? Is this a good way to start his term as president with the weight of
the people riding on his back?

This is only speculation from Fox News, but the evidence is very clear that the oath got
screwed up. I encourage readers to watch the oath again and see for yourself.

Note: I really liked Obama’s speech-I found it very compelling.

Cool!! I was just offering a bit of speculation that I heard on the news yesterday. It would really suck if he had to actually redo his oath.

Drudge is reporting that he just did re-do the oath. It is a requirement of the Constitution so I suppose he had to get it right. It probably took 30 seconds out of his day.

also reports that Roberts and Obama did a second take on the oath:

The precedent is that flubbing the Oath at the official ceremony is no big deal, and at least two previous Presidents (Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover) have been sworn in under similar circumstances.

I thought it was Groover Cevelend. Maybe they both flubbed, it's possible.

During Hoover's inauguration, it was Chief Justice Taft that flubbed the oath (which is doubly-funny, since Taft was a former President). Hoover is much more interesting since he is one of the very few Presidents who "affirmed" rather than "swore" his oath.

you are talking to one of the biggest history nerds in Southern New Jersey. Any chance you know were I can find more info on the Taft flub. It sounds like one of those really funny stories from U.S. History which I've always enjoyed reading.

Chief Justice Taft just changed a word in the oath. He asked Hoover to "preserve, maintain and defend the Constitution," instead of "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution."

People are just anal-retentive, some to the point where they would do absolutely anything to get a black man out of office. So what if he mispronounced it? Technically, the oath has been given the wrong way forever. The "So help me, God," phrase never appears in the Constitution. It was added by one of the Presidents around the beginning of America, and has been done ever since.

And seriously? He's the President, guys. Deal with it. He took the oath, so what if he stumbled over it? No one's perfect, and it looked like he was half-asleep whenever he wasn't speaking. Cut him some slack. He's not the god he was made out to be when he was campaigning. And if he's not President, answer me this: who the hell is? Someone has to be President, and it sure as hell isn't Bush. He's retaking the Oath, anyway.

It really annoys me that nobody can criticize Obama without somebody saying, "Oh, its cuz he's black huh?" It is not fair to throw the race card when the other person never even mentioned it in the first place. People do not criticize the fact that Obama is black, what they criticize is his policies and actions. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he is black.

The correct term for this behavior is ad hominem... It is a fallacy meaning that the speaker attacks the person instead of the argument. By saying, "some will do anything to get a black man out of office," you are jumping to the conclusion that people don't like Obama because he is African American. Granted there are a few crazy psycho people out there that are think they are the superior Aryan race; there are only a few. This is not the way the majority of people think.

Also, it is not even Obama's fault he has to retake his oath; it was the chief of Justice that screwed it up.

was calling you racist, per say, but just saying that some people will stop at nothing to discredit Mr. Obama just because of race. Just as there are others who are actively rooting for his failure simply because he is a Democrat. (I never saw the logic in rooting for a politician to fail just because they are of the other party. I didn't root for Mr. Bush to be wrong on any of the number of issues he was wrong on)

Ok I wil use the reply button next time. Thanks for the advice!

I just don't find it right that that everybody assumes that the people that don't like Obama because of his race. If people are somehow against him, it's mostly because of his actions or policies, not his skin color.

I agree with you in the sense that if the president is a good person that makes good decisions, it shouldn't matter what party he/she belongs to. Obama is the president...People can critisize him all they want, but he will be our president for the next four years. I am hoping that change will happen and the world will become a better place.
