2009 So Far

America scored a personal and badly needed governmental achievement by electing Barack Obama as the first African-American President. It will barely be a little over a week until Obama assumes Presidency and Bush will finally step down after eight painfully long years. Obama's win was met with expectations that since this miracle was reached, somehow, someway, the world will be a better place. Obama would lead a new term of peace and prosperity and the world will follow America's lead.
Well. . .so much for that. Despite that Obama did win, the world hasn't changed at all. It's still the same place, riddled with economic turmoil, political corruption, and Middle Eastern crisis. 2009 so far has started with the economy still, still not improving, despite the fact the government has the "brilliant" idea of throwing more money at the problem, leading to more economic misery, Illinois governor Blagovech (sorry if I'm spelling it wrong) being impeach, yet still having the skin to actually hire someone in the Senate, a guy that obviously has no place as a senator and is going on to trying to sue the Senate to get in. Not to mention the Israeli-Hama conflict.
And in more minor news, MSN recently posted an article stating that racism is still tolerated in some places. With Obama, the news coverage is not about his policies anymore but about his daughters adjusting to a new school, what sort of ugly doll they have as a toy, and what their lunch menu is.
I hate to say it but the economy is not going to get better any time soon. The government needs to realize this and stop throwing more money when they have absolutely no clue on how to fix it. Who is the economic advisor in the White House? Who suggested the bailout in the first place? Why are they continuing to stick to a plan that's not working and coming up with new ideas with how to fix it? Best idea: don't continue doing the things that caused the recession in the first place. Banks, don't give out loans to people that can't pay them back. For us normal people, we will have to stick with this a little longer and see where it goes.
Blagovech. . .political corruption. . .how long has this been around? Blagovech is nothing new. Political corruption will continue in America with and without Obama. I guess people thought that the political corruption would dwindle once the Republicans surrendered major power. However, "surprise", Blagovech is Democrat. The only thing that can be done is that the American government gets smarter and cracks down on corruption. Corruption interferes with an effective government so if we want to get our problems solved, the government needs to get a tighter focus and control on its own branches. The government has done a reasonable thing and impeached Blagovech. And hopefully, his nominee will not be allowed in government. Who wants a representative hired from a corrupt governor?
Israeli-Hamas conflict. . .Middle Eastern crisis are nothing new either and after five-almost six years in there, nothing has exactly been lost or gained. There have been a few minor accomplishments but the losses overwhelm whatever has been achieved. For Israel. . .Israel is a lightning rod for Middle Eastern conflict. Everytime Israel and the Middle East relations seem to be getting better, a new fight emerges. Few probably remember the 'minor' Israeli conflict in 2005.
I don't the exact cause of this conflict, I don't know why the major war. Should it matter? Civilian lives are at risk. That overrides any justification Israel has in invading Gaza. What's worst, the American government has refused to help end this conflict. What a shock, since Israel is a big American ally. Israel's major ally has refused to help end this destructive fighting. America. I don't care what justification Israel has, this is serious human lives. American government should grow a backbone and say something. Europe is already rallying to try and stop this, why can't America?
The Israeli-Hama conflict will resolve itself with or without American interference. But it's a major setback for the Middle East.
For the minor stuff. . .racism still active? In America? Come on. People really thought that since Obama became President, that was going to change? People aren't quick to change. Racists will still be racists. People will still be who they are. Obama can't change that.
And as for the constant coverage of the Obama daughters, I can see the curiousity of normal people for them and the media coverage is a product of celebrity media coverage of the decade but for serious media to care, who cares? Who cares what they have to eat at school? Why is it important that one of them has a butt-ugly doll? How is this important to how we live? If the journalistic media would be as surveillant on more important matters like say, Israeli-Hamas conflict, a lot more can be done. The Obama daughters don't appreciate it, and after the first day, we shouldn't either. Stick to more important matters.
Welcome to 2009. Political corruption, economic crisis, and Middle Eastern turmoil continue. The world is what is always is.
Final note: When Obama does assume Presidency, don't have superhigh expectations. He's not the next Messiah. He's only human. He'll make mistakes. He'll make decisions that will make people pissed. His campain promises will fall through like everyone else's. If he is smart enough to be President, he will be able to steer America back in the right direction.
