The Winner of the Fall 2008 Scholarship Is....

progressive u team's picture

After several weeks, we've finally got the winners chosen and verified. Now all we have to do is let all of you know who they are.

But first, we want to thank everyone who participated in this past competition. Some have made some life-long friends on this site, and we are thrilled that we can connect people in this way. We hope you all enjoyed your time on the site, regardless of whether or not you won anything, and we hope that you continue to be active even in the off season. Remember, if you have any suggestions for us, shoot us an e-mail (info[at]progressiveu.org) or send one of the moderators (the ones with the long badge) a PM with your suggestion. We'll take all suggestions to heart, and we've heard that we respond pretty well to feedback.

And now, the winners.

The BIG winner, who won the $1500 scholarship is... respectlife! She made quite an effort, and it was a close race, but respectlife will have the scholarship to attend Christendom in the fall.

For the runners-up, we are giving $50 gift certificates to Amazon.com. We hope that the runners up use these to help offset the cost of books. It's not much, but a little bit can go a long way.

The runners-up are turtlesuds in second place, and keanan in third place!

The honorable mentions are chosen by our staff. These are members who have made an impact on the site in some way. As a thanks for their efforts, we are awarding these individuals $25 gift certificates.

First up is asmaw for an amazing come-back. She was in top contention for the scholarship last year, but dropped out due to personal reasons. She made an amazing comeback this semester to land her in the top 10. We wish her the best in her future academic pursuits.

Next, we have cosmic for being a good sport. He is one of our few conservative members, who are usually pushed away due to the liberal ideas of our students. Rather than leaving, cosmic argued his points clearly in a way that promoted discussion, instead of arguments.

Our third honorable mention is Green Underbelly for being passionate about his cause. He's written some excellent blogs about the environment that have earned top marks by members of ProgressiveU.

Finally, we give this award to john w connelly jr for diligence. He started over a month behind many of the people in the competition, but still managed to climb into the top 10 at the end.

Congratulations to all our winners. We hope our award helps you pursue your education to the best of your ability. A special thanks to the following individuals for making it possible to give out these gift certificates: Annette Shorman, Courtney Shulist, Tayna Gunn-Egan, Sylvia Gunn, Sarah Booth, Rebecca Zollo, Courtney Glenn, Elizabeth Dombach, Panfilo Federico, and John Kendrick. Without them, we wouldn't have been able to recognize so many amazing individuals.

We have some awesome features coming up on the site. We're working on a way for everyone to earn rewards for their participation on the site year-round. Stay tuned for more information!

I don't care...because it is an honest mistake. I also don't think I necessarily deserve the award. But the good feelings and thoughts are very mucho appreciated.

ps Congrats to the Winners, you three are definitely the ones I thought would win, of course I had no clue of the order or who would come out on top. But you guys wrote awesome blogs and created much discussion, thought, even changed a lot of us, well I am speaking for myself here, then :)

Thank you for your dedication .

Of course a thousand trillion thanks to the Staff, the behind the scenes heroes, and those who donated their personal money.

I sort of thought I was in too deep and being crushed because I wanted to stand up for My liberal views and we actually had some dedicated conservative bloggers, not that we don't have a few now...but besides other things in my life, I didn't feel as if it was worth it to argue and get so into it like a maniac.

I am glad that the year (plus my absence) taught me to not be too deep in my own thoughts and point of view.

ps I thought we were not cool, meaning you, as in Wombels, didn't think I deserve that in 2007, just because you were trying to help me out and I wasn't ready to deal weith life.

I don't think I deserved it, which is why things turned out this way.

I am happy with all of it.

"I don't think I deserved it, which is why things turned out this way."

We humans do have a tendency to live up to our own expectations or ourselves.

I have a hard time believing wombels is not cool with you. If what you said is true RE: not being ready to deal with life, I suspect he picked up on that and didn't press further.

I could be wrong, but I was surprised to read this. I was actually looking through old blogs from '07 to find what you might be talking about, but couldn't.

Thanks so much to everyone! I've really enjoyed getting to know everyone over the past few months and feel so blessed to have won! My only regrets when I discovered that I'd won was that turtlesuds or keenan didn't win, because they were the two that I was guessing would win.

I really, REALLY hope that ProgressiveU can continue the scholarship because I think it was an incredible few months! After it was over, I told my mom that even if I didn't win anything, I still would have considered my time worth while because of everything I'd learned and everyone I'd met.

Thanks again!

Great job guys! You deserve to win. Even though life is difficult but still there’s hope behind this difficulties and suffering. An education is amongst the most valuable of things to have, and once you have a bachelor's degree, it all but guarantees you extra money in your career. However, the question is worthy as to whether going to an elite, private college is worth the cost of education. According to a report by Smart Money, the answer is a resounding no. Private college graduates had a lower amount of return on their cost of attendance and degree versus career earnings and extra money than graduates of state schools. The most elite of elites, the Ivy League schools, amongst the world's most prestigious, had the worst rate of returns. Here are the results of the SmartMoney study and more ideas on how to save extra money on college.

You guys did an awesome job with your posts!! Congratulations to everyone!

Congratulations, everyone! When does the next contest start?

Just to show my geekiness:

"We would destroy the Cybermen with one Dalek! You are superior in only one respect."
"What is that?"

Well, the plan is, if we can get the funding, to have it later this year... let me get back.

Friendly reminding to use GoodSearch ( http://www.goodsearch.com/ ) for ProgressiveU and GoodShop for the things you are going to buy anyway . And to donate a dollar via PayPal in the column to the left.
