Now I myself do not believe in a God, however, that does not mean I do not think that there is an importance for God. I also think that we can learn a lot from religion, and all the major religions in our world share common morals and lessons, they all just have different ways of getting there. I think that we need to look past the different paths and become more tolerant of others as a whole.
I think religion is very important to people. I think humans need to think that they are created with a purpose and are special creatures. I think that this is what makes religion powerful and valuable. It gives us purpose. It gives us a goal. Without religion and the hope that there is something better than this world, like a heaven or reincarnation, what would there be to keep us moral. This was Immanuel Kant’s argument for religion. Religion is here to give us purpose and keep us moral. Without a reason to stay moral, we would not. Religion gives many of us that reason. Sigmund Freud also said something similar. He thought that humans need to believe in God in order to survive. He said that even if religion and God are illusions that we created, that does not mean they do not have value, we give these illusions value. An illusion, according to Freud sometimes comes true. For example, a young middle class girl has the illusion that she will grow up to marry a prince, and sometimes this is possible. Freud believed that this wish fulfillment in the illusion is what gives us motivation to keep on believing. That is what is important. I do not think that anything that makes us behave and become better people can be bad, even if II personally believe it is not true. I don’t know why people always feel the need to pick on religion, when it does so much good for so many people. Just because you do not believe in it that does not make it wrong. It is right for them and that is what matters. I also believe that everyone has a faith, whether that faith means you believe in a god, or makes you an atheist, you still believe in something. I also do not believe that one religion is better than any other, because as I stated earlier, it gives everyone purpose, meaning, and gives them a goal and way to live. It is right for them and that is what counts. I personally think it is wrong when people try to force their beliefs on others because just because it is in your mind right does not make it better than anyone else’s personal beliefs.
I think that’s the same for people who try to oppress others; it is wrong, what gives you the right to do that? Everyone should be entitled to their own beliefs and opinions! Everyone should be able to voice their own opinions without prejudice or oppression! We are in the twenty first century, we can do better. Everyone is entitled to their own personal beliefs, and we should respect that and not oppress or attack other people for believing in what they do!
