Don't Judge at First Glance

respectlife's picture

I’ve always looked younger than I am. Always. I’m 16, and when I tell people, they’re shocked. In fact, one man recently told me that I could pass for every bit of twelve. Yeah…that’s me. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I’m so short (5’0”) and I have such a baby face. One of my friends told me she thinks it’s my hair style, but if I get a new hair style, then that means that I might actually have to fool with it for more than five minutes, and that just doesn’t work for me.

Growing up, I had to endure getting kiddy cups while my friends got the adult cups because the waiters assumed I was younger. I always hated eating out because of that. I couldn’t stand being 13 and being treated like I was 10.

I had to (and still do…) deal with people’s obvious shock that I’m this age, because I look so much younger (try 2-4 years…). After giving me a blank look, they scrape their jaws off the floor and tell me bluntly that I don’t look 16. Then I have to put on that fake smile and say “Yeah, I get that a lot.”

However, I’m a lot more serious about things when I’m with my friends. I have a friend who looks older than she is (she’s 17 and multiple people were asking her if she was her 24yo sister’s older sister. Others ask her if she’s her 13yo brother’s mother.). She acts crazy a lot, even in public, and I’m the one who’s telling her to calm down and not to kill us (she drives…be scared). It’s funny because she wishes she looked younger and I wish I looked older…oh, and get this…one time, we went to the bank, so she could take out some cash, and the teller actually asked if I wanted a sucker. She looked at me with a wicked grin and said “I don’t know. Sara, do you want a sucker?” I gave her a look of death and she just laughed and said we’d take two. THEN they turned out to be banana. All that trouble and I don’t even like banana!

I think growing up like that has made me act older (generally…as long as chocolate’s not around…then I turn into a kid in a candy shop). I have the desire to be treated as an adult (also because I’ve always been ahead in my studies, so that just adds to the whole “I feel older…”), and people just assume that I’m younger, so I’ve tried to act older in an attempt to sound older. Doesn’t work…I still get the O.O…

People tell me that I’ll appreciate it when I’m older…however, I’m 16, and thinking that I’m going to like it when I’m 50 isn’t really comforting right now…

So until then…I’m just going to complain about it. But my point is to not judge people at a first glance. There is a lot more than people than the apparent exterior and being quick to judge just makes regrets later. One thing I love/hate about the internet is that you formulate relationships and opinions of people by how they act/respond/talk/etc, and not how they look. So remember what’s important about people and look beyond first glances to formulate opinions.

I'm 20 and one time I ran into one of my friends who is 15 or 16 and we started talking. She was with one of her friends who asked who I was when I turned around. My friend told her and said I was in college. "She doesn't look like it, she looks like she's our age," the friend said. I told her that I get that a lot which I do. I've gone back to visit with friends and people mistake me for being my little sister's younger sister. One time we ran into some friends of our parents who thought my sister was the one in college. But on the bright side they thought I was the one who played Dorothy in Wizard of Oz at the community theatre. I think its starting to happen less though, as I act a little more like a college student and become more bitter and cynical. Just kidding.

Haha, yeah, I'm guessing that's what I'll be getting, too. To add on to that, I'm graduating a year early, so I'm going to look like even less of a college student when I am one!

That's awesome that you got to play Dorothy! I love Wizard of Oz!

I'm 19. Someone said they thought I was 30 and attributed it to my beard and "calm voice". :eh:

Don't worry about it. i have people come up to me and think i am much older than i am. i have also had many people come up to me and assume that i am much younger than what i really am.

i think it depends one what i am wearing. i am also very hyper, so i suppose that they assume i am younger.

the point is that people are fickle and don't hold any crediability to their age judgement or on that matter fashion judgement.
you have to just laugh it off and add some twisted and a bit of dark humor to it.

or and i definitely argree, banana suxxxxxxxxx lol

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous....

I agree! OMGosh, my friend brought the whole bank thing up at Taco Bell last night. Then we all started arguing over whether or not banana was good. : P

Oh once upon a time...I swear how is it we all have these stories. My favorite example is when I was out and about with my boyfriend who was only a little older then he should have been. I was 21 and he was 28. The waiter man thought it was cute asked him if he always takes his daughter on the road with him... OOO i thought there was going to be a fight and that it would be over right then and there.

I still look younger and confuse the hell out of people, thankfully everyone in my class suffers from the same thing.

Good luck

Urgh... I get so many mixed reactions. I'm 21 and most people think I'm not old enough to drive yet. I went to one of my mom's friend's house, and she had a friend there I hadn't met yet. I had to leave earlier than my mom, so I went over, picked up the keys to my car, and the lady turned to my mom and asked if she was going to let me drive. So, I generally get pegged as being 15-16.

And yet, when my little sisters were younger (they're 10 and 12 right now; the 12 year old is as tall as I am, the 10 year old is really short), people would come up to me and either chastise me for treating 'my kids' a certain way (long story), or say that I had such cute daughters. Actually... that happened in Walmart about 3 months ago when I just had my littlest sister with me and she was goofing around. I chastised her, and a guy came up and said something about listening to mom. My sister and I looked at each other and burst out in nervous laughter at that comment. I don't think the guy ever got the joke.

People still card my mom, thinking that she's in her mid-20's (they're generally required to card someone if they look under 30), and find it incredible that she's old enough to have a 21 year old daughter.

Well, I wish I got mixed reactions...EVERYONE assumes I'm younger than I am.

I've had friends who've toted around their siblings and gotten told that they have cute kids.

Another story: I was home for spring break last year and my mom and I stopped to talk to a new neighbor. He mostly spoke to my mom, not a big deal since I hadn't met him yet and my mom just wasn't thinking to introduce us. Anyways, at one point, he starts giving me a lecture about what to do if I have some trouble with the police, like I was a little kid. He even apologized a few times for swearing. I didn't know what to do so I just nodded and acted like this wasn't akward. Once he was gone I said to my mom, "How old do you think he's thinking I am?" My mom just shrugged and kind of laughed. "Didn't he wonder why he's never seen me before?" "I guess not my mom replied." He has moved since then, and I can't help but wonder if he ever found out he was apologizing for his language to a college girl.

All through high school people thought I was older than I was. Then when i became an adult and entered the real world people thought I was a teenager.

i will never forget my first day on the adolescent psych ward. i was new and didn't have a badge yet. i was wearing street clothes, which is allowed.

I was reading one of the posters that had the unit rules on it when a staff member approached me, put her arm around my shoulders and asked me, "Aren't you going to group honey?"

I was stunned and didn't say anything. I was more embarrassed about being mistaken as a patient than my age.

I am blonde and always felt like people made false assumptions about me based on that. Men, and boys who would look or touch as if they felt like I existed only for them and wouldn't object because that what dumb blondes are for. I am proud to say I bruised a few crotches in my youth. Oh yeah, I have a robust chest as well. That didn't help much. I often fantasized about getting a breast reduction.

I started dying my hair and people's reactions to me totally changed. When I dyed it red my stepmother, who is a redhead, would laugh and tell me I was jealous, and then say that it was Artificial Intelligence. There isn't a blonde joke in the world I haven't heard.

My favorite, "How can you tell when a blonde is having a bad day?"

Answer: "When there's a tampon resting on her ear and her pencil is missing."

"Consistency is not a human trait" - Maude, from Harold and Maude

Hehe...how old did she think you were?

Yeah, blond jokes are kinda old after awhile...I've met too many genius blonds to believe them. : P

Once anyone hears me talk, they never EVER assume that I am younger than at least 18 but no one believes I am 21, haha.

Truthfully, I DON"T even believe it. I feel like a kid.
