Should guns become illegal?

Tagged:

Short Answer, yes. Long Answer, no. I have discussed this with many other people and heard different stories from each. Some say yes they should be illegal for the public, but only certain guns. These guns are assualt rifles, machine guns, sniper rifles, and rpg's. I personally agree with this. I understand that gun collector's may want these, but the general public have no use for these weapons. It would simply be overkill for a hunter to take a M14 duck hunting. These guns were made for one purpose, to kill people. As are all guns. So I say yes they should be illegal, but only certain types of guns should be.
Now, some of you might be agreeing with the people I talked to that said they shouldn't be illegal. Let me ask you this, Why? Many say that it is for self defense in the home or on the streets. That is a viable reason, but I have a scenario (and we asked someone this exact question). Lets say you are a gun collector and you have guns throughout your house. For home defense you have a shotgun under your bed and a pistol under you pillow (both loaded might I add), let's say that a robber/murderer entered your bedroom while you slept then held a knife at your throat. You wake up in a slight panic feeling this huge combat knife up against your throat. The person asks for all your money and valuable jewlery. Does the gun help you in this situation? Now, the person told me that she would go for the gun under her pillow, so lets talk about what might happen. "You go for the loaded pistol under your pillow. Startled by your sudden movement the person stabs you with his knife. You lie there...dead" . Now that was just one of the many examples of this topic (F.Y.I the person we talked to actually kept a loaded gun under her pillow and bed.), Im not saying that this is always the case and yes, guns can sometimes be helpful in these situations, but its the point that many people with in the general public have access to guns that are neither legal for hunting, or needed for home defense.
Im all for the right to bear arms, its just the type of arms that concern me. When students and killers have access to assualt rifles, machine guns, etc. is when im concerned. Only active military soldiers should have access to these, and only when they are not on leave. But hey, I could be wrong because I tend to get very vague about these types of things. And also guns are protected by our Bill of Rights to have them, but then again is there a real reason why Jimmy is some how able to buy a M16 assault rifle? If I was able to talk I could say more, but unfortunetly I can't and I seem to be unable to get all my thoughts in order to type them down. Maybe someday Ill redo this. Oh well feel free to comment and remember, this is my opinion.

Short answer,

The only individuals who should have access to guns upon this planet are politicians, so they can receive and use guns in jail, were they all belong!

Other than that, weapons should become a long forgotten bad memory of a past once lived!

Long answer,
Time will give meaning and importance of the short one!

Your rather silly hypothetical situation probably would render the gun useless. But that proves nothing. I can think of several hundred hypothetical situations where a gun would prevent a crime.

A criminal is far less likely to enter the home of a person who he suspects is armed with a shotgun. Anybody who has ever seen what a shotgun will do to a piece of 3/4" plywood or a watermellon from about 20 feet is smart enough to avoid the possibility that one would be fired at their chest.

Instead the criminal is far more likely to rob the person next door that does not have a sign in his window that reads "this home secured by Smith and Wesson".

One of the most important reasons for owning a firearm is deterrence. If you have one you are far less likely to actually need one.

I have several firearms. Some are intended for hunting, a few are for target shooting and a few are explicitly for the purpose of killing people in self-defense. I hope I never have the need to use them.

I personally would prefer a world without guns. I think we need to sharpen up on our gun controls and focus on poor areas.I am a big supporter of gentrification.

if we get people off the street then perhaps they wouldn't result to violence and the use of dangerous guns.

removing all guns immediately wouldn't be the solution. it would just be a bandaid for the problem.

Your situation is funny to say the lest. If someone had a knife to my throat I would tell him that the money is over on the other side of the room if he did not kill me at that moment in time he would be dead. I would then have time to get my gun. Having the gun or not will not help you in all moments, but having a gun and a dog would. The dog would tell you that something is wrong or someone has come into your house. Then you can get the gun and if the dog had not stopped the would be knife welding criminal then I would. I fully support owning of guns I hope never to have to aim that at a living person but I would if I have to.
