I am so thrilled today about this wonderful piece of information I have just discovered. I read an article in the LA Times titled, “College recruiting booms in California.” I am born and raised in California and it is my dream to go to college outside of state. I am really anxious to experience life from a new perspective with different surroundings and peers.
I have been hearing since I was little that each year it gets harder and harder to get accepted into a college or university. With each passing year people are more eager to get the best job or strive for the highest paycheck. Therefore, colleges have a lot more applicants waiting to be accepted.
According to the article however, more and more high school seniors across the nation are dropping out of school. This causes a dip in the number of students applying for college. So, admissions officers are scrambling to recruit more students from different states to fill their entering classes. The article also says that these recruiters are flocking to California to persuade students to apply to out of state colleges.
It was mentioned that this change of plan in the admissions office will make it slightly easier for out of state students to be accepted. (This is an added bonus for me!!). I do however believe that this slight change will not significantly change the tables when it comes to being accepted…but it is a nice dream. I know that the personal statement, SAT scores, GPA, and activities are still the number one selling point in getting accepted. I am just a little excited that I might be one step ahead of the game because I am from California.

Interesting. I am guessing they are flocking to California because of the recent budget cuts in education which would limit the number of students accepted in California colleges.
The budget cuts will probably also force California State Schools to raise in-state tuition. This should make schools that are recruiting from out of state somewhat more competitive.
The very top echelon schools will always be very tough and competitive to gain admittance. But I would think that the tough economy would make getting admitted to most colleges somewhat easier because there will be less competition. Many people for whom college seemed within reach a few months ago are going to find themselves hard pressed to afford college given changed economic circumstances. And the financial institutions are in trouble so college loans are harder to come by.
Out of state students are good for buisness. They pay much higher tuition which means they need to recuit fewer students to meet quota...the rest will be gravy and hopefully campus improvments.
I am glad I have a military ID in this case... its like an automatic instate/ in county pass!
To us CA girls!
good luck and keep us posted on which state you go to.
