Three of the already listed relevant “progressive principles” are, I think, good ones and important principles to keep in mind while we discuss progress. If I ran the website, I would keep them. They are as follows:
1. Personal Freedom: To me, this means that individuals have self-determination, the right to decide the best course of action for them. An important component of this is the empowerment of individuals. Helping people realize the tremendous power they have within themselves and helping them channeling it effectively. When “the best course of action” for one individual gets in the way of the rights of others, a compromise MUST be sought. This could be our undoing.
2. Effective Government: One that operates with the best interest of the nation and its citizens in mind. It is one that does not operate at the will of special interests, or the will of the one with money or out of a family vendetta. Finally, it is a government that responsibly addresses the basic human rights of everyone, even those who are not citizens.
3. Shared Responsibility: There are certain things for which everyone is responsible. For example, the treatment of nature and our planet. No one person can rectify the massive amount of damage that has been done; it is a collective effort. As another example, rebuilding a community - like New Orleans - after a disaster or something tragic. Again, no one person can do all that, and it will not be whole until all involved take part.
Additionally, there are two other principles that I would add as being important ones while building towards progress.
4. Social Justice: I don’t understand why this concept is not already a “progressive principle.” To me, this means the eradication of oppression on both a personal and institutional level. On a personal level, I mean taking responsibility for one’s ideas and preconceptions. On the institutional level, I mean things like redlining, the lax enforcement of the ADA, and the “glass ceiling.” These things are not necessarily done by any one person but by a system. Therefore, the system needs to change for these injustices to change.
5. Reciprocity: Perhaps this is not the best word, but what I mean is essentially the Golden Rule in practice. Treating others as one would like to be treated. Furthermore, I mean not doing it as a way to be “owed,” if you know what I mean, but doing it as a way to pay it forward. There are so many blessings that have descended upon us, me, blessings undeserved, and I need give thanks by paying it forward.

A phrase that I love, and often tag my blogs with is "Promoting Tolerance." I am not sure how you feel about it, but I think it encompasses what you are getting at with reciprocity.

Great suggestion! I don't konw how much I love the word "tolerance" because that seems negative or constricting, but at the same time, it's an accurate description. I'm still chewing on it, but thanks for tagging your blogs with that and for suggesting it!

I love the idea of having social justice be a principle. I wonder, though, how you imagine your reciprocity idea would fit into the realm of blogs? What sort of blogs would be tagged with it?

and thanks for posting. What I think the reciprocity idea means in practical terms will happen when people write about something they’re debating, a decision they’re making and they want to make the best move or if they want to make a comment on some public or national policy – is there reciprocity (in the writer’s opinion) and if there isn’t, what would be better?
Perhaps I’m utilizing the blog for the wrong reason, however, I know my posts can be very stream-of-consciousness because I want feedback, I want to know how others have done it, if they have, I want their perspective. Does that answer your question?
