Gun control. Will that solve the problems of the United States? No it will not because guns are not the problem.
America’s problem, is that we have a soon to be president that is putting people in danger, rewriting the constitution, and taking away family heirlooms.
So eloquently spoken “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Guns cannot kill people alone. Some would argue by taking away the legal sale of guns, people would not as easily be able to kill another. My rebuttal? Since when has someone trying to kill another, buy a gun legally? Criminals buy their guns on the street, where the cost is cheaper and the process is easier. Discontinuing the legal sale of guns will only harm the law abiding citizens. The law abiding citizens will be unable to protect themselves when a criminal invades their home with an illegally bought gun. There only hope will to be prayer, as their fate lies in the hands of the criminal with the gun.
President elect Barack Obama’s Gun Control plan is not only irrational but treacherous. By impeding the sale of guns, Obama is taking away an American citizens right to bare arms. The second amendment states “Right to bear arms and maintain state militias” Obama taking away guns rewrites the constitution. If America turns its back on the constitution, which are country was based on, who is to say that the changes will stop at Gun Control? In my opinion Gun Control is a socialistic idea.
Not only is Gun Control dangerous, and un-American, but it is unwarranted. Guns are not only a way to protect yourself and a constitutional right, but are a part of heritage. In my family and in others, guns are passed down throughout generations. My grandfather has guns from his grandfather, I hope one day to own. I cannot describe the feeling of holding something in my small hands that my great great grandfather did. Guns are family heirlooms that remind me of my heritage and loved ones.
Gun Control will harm law abiding citizens, remove a constitutional right, and take away my family’s heirlooms. I do not support that. Therefore I do not support Gun control.

i have the right to safety, but i do not feel safe when people are running around with guns.
if we limit the market for guns there will be less crimes.
guns make it too easy for people to kill
I respect your opinion (My best friend is for gun control ironically)
However by limiting the gun market would only increase illegal gun sales on the streets. How is that going to lessen crime?

No, there won't. In fact, most of the places that have had gun control measures taken have actually seen crime go up. DC being a prime example.
guns make it too easy for people to kill
Knowing for a fact that your victim isn't armed also makes it too easy to kill people.

The city I live in has very strict gun laws. For all intents and purposes, you can't have a firearm anywhere other than in your home and at the shooting range (and going between the two places). Yet shootings are somewhat typical around here. In fact, about a month ago, we had six shootings in as many days.
Considering that being armed is an effective form of self-defense (PDF), I'd feel safer if I, a law-abiding citizen, could actually make use of my Constitutional right to bear arms.
Then, there's also the area that I grew up in which happened to be a major hunting area. Every home typically had enough firearms to outfit a small battalion. Yet there was not a single case of firearm related accidents or crimes committed in that area. Why? Because guns are a part of life there. They are tools that are to be treated with the same respect (if not more) that the knife set gets. There is also a very, very good chance that someone's potential victim has a weapon and knows how to use it, making them a hard target.
As an avid supporter of the Second Amendment, I've run into this debate a number of times. At one point, I got into a debate that brought up several good points that I didn't, at the time, have rebuttals for. So, I brought it up in my personal blog. One of the responses I received, from someone who is quite knowledgeable in both firearms and military history, included the following:
Exhibit B - prisons. Inmates are sure as hell not allowed to have anything that could be remotely considered as a weapon. Yet they still somehow manage to make things that can easily harm or even kill other people.

I was beaming when I read your comment. Its not often I hear people, other than my family, who are against gun control.
I also read your blog and I will share my opinion. The belief that guns in the home put children at risk is ludicrous. My mother always kept the guns put away and unloaded. They were never in the way or endangered me as a child. When I grew old enough, she pulled them out and taught me about GUN SAFETY before I could even hold or shoot one.
Thank you again for sharing.
The two keys are responsible ownership and education. Without either, a person with a gun is, indeed, dangerous and somewhat unpredictable. However, you can substitute "knife" or the name of any other dangerous tool for "gun" in that sentence and also have an elevated sense of danger.
You don't keep knives at a level where a small child can reach them. You don't keep your jigsaws or saws-alls plugged in, with the bits in, and at a level where kids can reach them. You don't leave your kids unsupervised anywhere near any of these things. That's called being responsible.
You teach your kids that the knives, the saws-all, and the jigsaw are tools, not toys, and that they're not to be touched unless a parent is directly watching/helping. You show them how to use them properly and the safely when you feel they're old enough. That's education.
Why should firearms be any different?

of gun violence in our city.....and when my cousin's grandparents lived in an especially rough neighborhood, he kept a gun under his pillow,
and yes, he knew how to work it as he had been a policeman all his life in Pakistan.

Its disappointing to think, that because of criminals, someone has to sleep with a gun under their pillow to feel safe.
However I am glad to know that he had a gun to protect himself in case something happened. I shutter to think how life would have been if he did not have a gun (Probably lots of sleepless nights)
