Imagine a red barn, half a dozen horses, a goat, some chickens, two bunnies, lots of trees and grass, and a babbling brook running right through the middle of California suburbia. With this lovely section of land, Marcia Crommie has developed Horsie Camp, an incredible camp that teaches young children how to ride and care for horses. I was given the opportunity to become a counselor at this camp, and I took Marcia up. It was the experience of a lifetime.
Being a counselor at Horsie Camp allowed me to become a teacher and a friend to the campers. My job was to teach them how to ride horses, how to take care of them, and how to be safe around them, but, I believe they got much more out of it. While caring for the horses, the campers learned to not only care for themselves, but others as well. During the camp, the campers also made friends with a large range of people, which helped them interact on many different levels. This gives the campers a step up on the rest of the kids in today’s society. The campers also learned how to have patience. This skill is essential when communicating and dealing with others. In addition, they were given the opportunity to give their input on many different subject matters. This will help them with their communicating skills right now and later on in life. I hope this camp was as fun for them as it was for me.
Being a counselor was an incredible experience for me. I hope I left an impression that will last a lifetime. The world is not about people as individuals, we all have to work together to live in peace. I know that these kids are one step closer to it.
