Crazy right? How can a person be so happy about her husband taking smoking up again to the point of calling it a blessing? Well, in one word- Chantix.
What is Chantix? It is one of the more popular effective drugs available to help people quit smoking and over come their addiction.
My husband decided he would quit smoking because it was starting to run his life. I was annoyed because I could not deal with another thing to have to deal with. I am not sure that made any sense but I am a nursing student with two children under the age of five and I take them and my house serious. To have a newly recovering addict in the house with all the irritability that goes along with was another stressor that I did not think I could deal with.
The doctor prescribed Chantix for my husband and what a bear that first week was. I guess you could say he was anxious and volatile the first week but that was to be expected. We looked over the side effects which included strange dreams, nausea, constipation, aggression, crazy dreams and even suicidal ideation in some extreme cases. We were prepared for any inkling of bowel impaction or over negative thoughts. We had a plan in place, our tushes covered in everthing that could come up.
For about forty five days he exercised vigorously due to a need to meet military standards. This was good also to prevent just about all the side effects. He recently passed his fitness test and he relaxed his regimen to normal. This week he had a military exercise (where they practice war time scenarios) which cut his routine out entirely. I noticed that over the past few days he had more stress type behaviors and was getting a little gruffer, even so, what happened today was very out of character for him.
He was working on a storage container type thing, what it is called is not important, what IS important is that the door was stuck. Anybody would step back from that and think about the cold, or other factors, which would make a door get stuck and seek to fix the problem. This is NOT what happened. Instead of this healthy dealing with a minor problem he proceeded to beat the ever living hell out of it. He bent metal and broke the hinge. This made such a vivacious noise that the boss (for those of you who know military words this would be the flight chief) came down and calmly talked my husband composed. He kept saying ‘the door won’t open’ and she told him to go to the hospital and let them know that he was on this stop smoking medication and what just happened.
He went and the doctor told him to immediately stop taking this medication and explained that this is sort of what they meant by aggression and suggested he smoke to even out what was left of the trouble. They said in thirty days he could try this other med, Wellbutrin, and to limit his smokes per-day so it wont be to hard to quit. They did not want him undoing the work he already done. They also asked his happenings over the past weeks because this symptom should have presented quickly. This is how we know that the exercise really helped him a lot.
The blessing, as I mentioned before, is the mandatory exercise that kept him level this long. Most importantly is that fact that he could have been home when he went ape over a small thing, like what kids do from time to time, and hurt one of us. Had this happened my husband would be dead, I would be in jail, and my kids’ future would be questionable with their lives in such turmoil.
What I bring to you today is a warning, not necessarily against Chantix, but towards side-effects and what they really mean and which ones to look for. We focused on the common ones and how to combat them and of course the big one, suicide. We often allow our selves to get distracted and ignore all the facts. SO please read your drug labels and actually consider what each one means, how to deal with EACH side effect, and pay attention to how you feel both physically and mentally. In a world that has a pill for everything we often forget to clarify, or even recognize the effects, both good and bad, of these pills and their interactions with daily life.

I just learned about Chantix last week. My coworkers were talking about a 22 year old woman who had hung herself in the bathroom with her hospital gown. Thank goodness the people on the floor were intuitive enough to know something wasn't right. A coworker of mine went into the room, saw water on the floor, opened the bathroom door, grabbed her by the waist, hoisting her up as high as she could, screaming for help. They said she was already blue, and not breathing.
Our code blue team was able to resuscitate her. She went to the emergency room. Last week one of our therapists was on the unit when my coworker was telling me this story. The therapist happened to have taken over her case after she discharged. Patients frequently ask for this lady after they discharge.
My therapist friend said this young girl was really an amazing woman, with a lot of support. She said this girl's problem was a psychotic reaction to Chantix.
I was shocked. I said, "What's wrong with Wellbutrin, it worked for me!" She said this particular drug got pushed past the FDA way to fast. Damned pharmaceutical companies.
Let me just say, if you need a med to quit smoking, wellbutrin has been on the market a lot longer and is much safer.
Indeed if you have a bipolar disorder or psychotic disorder, wellbutrin is not good for you. It is good for people with ADD like symptoms. it can cause insomnia and restlessness for some. It can also reduce the seizure threshhold in people who have seizure disorders.
I am a nurse, not a doctor. Always talk to your doctor first, but I recommend doing your own research before you see your doctor, for anything.
Thank you for this blog! This is important information.

Honestly I would NOT suggest Wellbutrin either. My mom went on that to quit smoking and went psychotic . The dog started barking and she beat the cage with a shovel screaming. Chantix is not something that ANYONE should go on. There was a man that killed his family while on that... I suggest nicorette patches or something to be honest.
My issue is they do not test these drugs long enough before they put it on the market and although I understand the urgency I think we need to take more time and save more lives.
Please don't let him go on wellbutrin. I am begging u.

I had not heard that from welbutrin so I am glad you said something. I really do plan on looking into it more. Had you mom recovered pretty quickly form the psychosis?
I am really glad to see you around again.

Different meds have different effects on people of course you know that. I think that it actually might be a problem for people who smoke cigs because my bf took it and didn't smoke and he was ok. who knows though that is just what I experienced. I believe that she MIGHT have been going through menopause so that could have also been a factor. I guess it is worth a try though. Yeah she returned back to normal pretty quickly. Like I said it could have been other factors as well...but he could try and see.
But then again I am also against taking meds for things and the main reason is because I have had bad experiences on all of the ones I have taken. I am planning on writing a blog on how they don't test them long enough but I am not sure if I am going to.
I am glad to be around again!!! I missed u and everyone else sooooo much!

about the menopause. I wonder if there is a correlation.
I would love to read that blog.
another thing pharm companies do is charge way too much for meds people need, especially psych meds. it's really gross.

I tend to be anti-meds too. When I quit, I did it without any and I think that if he wants to quit he should and does not need any pill. It seems like a placebo thing...but this is just me and some may actually NEED...I don't know.

whatever works. what matters is quitting. wellbutrin can make it much easier. Kind of like how an epidural makes childbirth less painful. Yeah there's a risk for complications. It's a personal choice.

*if* a person has a history of psychosis or bipolar disorder. for those who do not have a history of mental illness, it is not a problem.
wellbutrin has been on the market for over 10 years. it is much more understood than chantix.

That drug CAN have that effect on many people who don't have bipolar disorder. I know my mom did not have that so seriously it was crazy. But I understand what u r saying.
