Piggy Food and Ippopodumiss Kisses

turtlesuds's picture

My little girl is very bright. As you may already know, she is 2 and a half. Thanks in part to school, and to Baby Einstein videos, she knows most of the animals, and the names of the planets.

One of my favorite things she does is say, "Ippopodumiss Kisses," and stretch her mouth open as wide as she can. She started this when she saw two hippos "kissing" with their mouths wide open on one of her videos.

I just wanted to share that, I think it's terribly cute.

More important is the story about piggy food. We have a small collection of piggy banks. I got one for her for her first Christmas, and we have gotten a few as gifts since then. My mother in law got her a plastic pig with big plastic colored coins, that when inserted, make the piggy sing a song, and count each coin that she puts in.

Since that first Christmas, my husband and I have a made a point of putting all of our pocket change in her piggy banks. She has graduated from the big plastic coins to real money. Whenever she sees pocket change, she gets so excited and says, "Piggy food, Oink, Oink!" Every day I come home and she searches my pockets for piggy food. She is having a hard time right now accepting that real piggy food goes in, but doesn't come back out.

We also recycle our own cans and bottles, rather than just putting them out in the recycle receptacle from the city. We put the money in her piggy banks. So far we have saved around $800.00. We also put any money that people give her for birthdays or holidays in her piggy bank.

When her piggy banks get full, we empty them, and roll up all the coins, and deposit it into a first start youth savings account for when she turns 18.

In addition, I am able to put away $100 every month into a 529 college savings fund for her. Why is this progressive? Because my parents took no such measures to save anything for my education, and I am irritated because it is really not hard to do.

My parents made about $200,000 a year while I was in high school. When I graduated high school they gave me the gift of living at home without paying rent while I was enrolled in school. They didn't give me money for school. They also refused to cosign for any student loans for me. In spite of all the tests I had taken, including the ASVAB, which told me that I could be successful in almost any field, I went to community college, and then to nursing school. If my parents had made any effort to help me financially, I would have been a doctor instead of a nurse. Such is life. It's not a bad life.

When my daughter turns 18 and graduates high school with dreams of traveling the world, or joining the Peace Corps, I don't want to laugh at her. I want her to have the means to live any dream she imagines, provided it does not threaten her wellbeing.

I do think it was good for me in one sense to work for my own advancement, but I want my own daughter to be able to dream bigger than I was allowed to.

I urge anyone reading this who has children to think about small ways you can contribute to your child(ren)'s future. You don't have to be rich. A 529 is like a mutual fund, and the earlier you start the better. It is designed to be in the "high risk" range for the first 3-5 years (I can't remember which) and then decreases the level of risk as the child grows. As little as $5 dollars a month can make a big difference over time.

Thinking about her future also makes me more aware of how I spend, and sometimes waste money. I get excited when I see pennies, that's "piggy food," after all. And I can't stand to see a single plastic or glass bottle, or aluminum can wander into the trash. Yes, I admit, I will rustle trash around in order to rescue these if need be. And yes, I will wash my hands afterwards.

Your blogs, and this one in particular, are perfect examples of how anything can be turned into a progressive blog. This one is about your life, your daughter. It has a cute story, but it is not JUST a cute story. I like how you broadened your focus to cover education financing. Nice work!

That is sooo cute about the kisses!!!!
yes, i understand my parents didn't have any college funds set up for me ( it is something they regret though)
so i am going to have to pay college with loams.

I think it is wonderful that you are already planning for your child's future. that's responsible.

I love that you are not only investing in your child's future, but being environmentally conscious as well. :D That sounds like an excellent idea and I wish more parents did that, especially considering how the cost of tuition is going up. It sounds like you really care about your daughter.

I do the same with my two kids...It is so good to know I am not strange!

My two and a half year old just got her first savings and she already understands it. My son saved up for his first bike and helmet and put away the other half for the next day. Of course now they fight over the misc. change but hey they can learn to share too!

Next he wants to save for a game table. He knows he has to save enough so he can spend half on what he wants and put the other half away. This five year old has a concept that most grown adults struggle with everyday...saving and waiting for when you can afford your wants and saving for the future.

Genious is found in the oddest places. And I commend your efforts!

I know I can compliment you on good writing, but this is just a precious story! Your child is going to be a remarkable women; you're doing wonderful things for her!

All I ask is that you go back in time and tell my dad to do the same thing. That's all I ask.

Your blogs have been so great and unique so far, that I'm very impressed. In fact, I'm going to go out there and say you are the "edible woman" of the Fall '08 competition. That's just the vibe I've been getting...

Seriously, thank you so much. I really am terribly surprised and flattered at the feedback I've received. I can't say enough about proU.

I had a rough start. I'm not used to this. I've never blogged before. I've only ever written prose and school papers. i gave up writing a long time ago.

You have all been so generous. It is your feedback that is so invaluable.

I had to make some mistakes, and suffer the consequences, but I am receptive. I am so grateful that you all have been gracious enough to let me know when I've crossed a line or provided misinformation.

This site is amazing. It is the best tool I have ever seen for an aspiring writer. Where else can you write, and throughout the process you have a live, interactive, objective audience?

i am also impressed with other members and their insights. i think that keanan, warrior poet, lennon12 and cosmic are terrific competition, and allies. I think that respectlife has a lot of potential. I have also been touched by Drifterdani6886 and kinkatia. I think they were both pretty involved in the last competition, and they are still here, still blogging for progress.

I feel a little sad that I wasn't around for the last competition. i read some of those posts, and i am so humbled. I really don't think i can live up to ediblewoman, but again, I am flattered.

All I can say to all of you is,
"just keep blogging."

Well we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. You start seeing a trend, like who can rant about politics and who can write personal life stories about themselves.

I love this site too. I've grown quite attached. :)

Oh, and don't worry about those past mistakes. You live, you blog, you learn from the mistakes you make, and then you can laugh at them later. I know I've made several mistakes during the time I've been here, like posting "How to" blogs about blogging after the head honchos ruled that those blogs had to be posted in the forums only (I must have missed the memo...), and sometimes my comments or something can get out of whack and I say something I didn't mean, or someone else thinks I've said something completely different. There have been a couple of occasions where newbies with hurt pride and a little vendetta have personal messaged me to explain why they are right and I am wrong. In one case, this led to the girl quitting the site within another day. Was that my fault? I don't know, maybe it was...

Anyway, you had a good point there! "Keep on blogging!"

I forget to mention carrot and rosalirin. I hope rosalirin posts more blogs. She has a lot to say. And I have to say it again, i love wombels! And Blackout is divine :). And if I didn't mention you, It's only because I'm still kind of new and I need to get to know you, or I've already told you how awesome you are somewhere else.

If you comment on my blogs, I will return the favor of reading, and maybe commenting on yours. At first I commented on every single new post, and I thought, "Wow, this site doesn't seem very progressive!" Then I started making people my buddies if I liked what I read. Now I only ready my buddies' posts. So if you make me your buddy, I'll probably read your post.

ROFL Thanks for the compliment, turtlesuds. : )

I LOVE reading your posts about your daughter. She sounds soooooo cute!!! Seriously, I just can't get over it. Eek, I love kids!

Oh, and I LOVE your "piggy food" idea. That's sheer brilliance. Like x3000 brilliance. And I totally ditto Bridge's request of going back in time and hinting to my dad about this idea : P If I ever have a family some day, I'm definitely going to incorporate these ideas into my life style. Thanks so much!
