Its that time of year again

The holiday season is coming up or also known as the giving season. We had a disussion in my english class about giving to the homeless people. I was outraged to hear the comments come out of peoples mouths. One person said that they are to lazy to get off the butts and get a job so why should we help them. We live in is such and "Me" "Myself" and "I" society. Young people do not know what it is like to struggle. You try getting a job when you have no address no phone number and no place to shower. I'd like to see someone go to an interview after not showering for months and tell me if they got the job.

Okay now to the facts: 23% are children under 18 with a parent, 42% of whom are under 5 years of age, 11% are parents with children, 84% of whom are single women, and 66% are single adults, and of these, three-quarters are men. About 40 percent of homeless men are veterans, although veterans comprise only 34 percent of the general adult male population. The National Coalition for Homeless estimates that on any given night, 200,000 veterans are homeless. They have fought for our country and live in boxes. Thats how we repay them? That right there is the reason we should give to the needy. Do I need to say more? Because I can.

Have you ever read the "Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls. Well, in the book she describes her parents as willingly becoming homeless.

Interesting statistics

No I haven't read the book. I'm sure there are some people out there who are homeless because they are lazy but the vat majority of people out there aren't most of them are veterans and children. So why shouldn't we help them?

I agree with you. infact the lazy ones are the poeple critizing the homeless for be lazy and not doing anything to help them.

I feel the same way.

It's a sad irony that every year, many Americans celebrate the story of the Virgin Birth, while basically saying there is "no room at the inn" for those below poverty level.

They are building something in arizona that is kinda like the subways in new york and there is talk about wuilbing a 70 billion dollar bridge that can go over the freeway so that people don't have to walk five blocks and when I asked why we can't take that money and put it towards homeless shelters the govner or mayor of the area I live in just told me we don't have the money to do that. So I was all we can build a 70 billion dollar bridge that will only cause people to gain weight butt we can't help out single moms and war veterans and she got all red faces and shut up it was great!

Sadly, I think in a lot of instances, the only projects that get completed are the profitable ones. If we want most politicians to pay attention to the homeless, we have to find a way to make caring for the homeless profitable.

Its sad it shouldn't be that way either.

And it's a bipartisan thing. Whenever a politician comes to Philly- Republican or Democrat- the people living on the street disapear. When Hillary Clinton spoke in Atlantic City, they sent the homeless away. When the convetions were held in the summer, the cities they were held in rounded up the homeless.

Aparently, our elected officials cannot be troubled with the least of their citizens.

It makes me so mad. We call ourselves American but we don't act like it.

I'm not sure if I'd say "we" aren't acting like Americans. I've known plenty of pastors, school nurses, teachers, vets, college students, housewives, and other average folks who have gone pretty far out of their way to help those in need. Even some of our elected officials have been known to have a soul every once in a while

Theres just a lot of people who don't act like an American
