Sailing Around the World

There was an incredible article in the Los Angeles Times the other day entitled, “Adventure on the High Seas.” It was about a sixteen year-old boy who is sailing around the world to become the youngest person to circulate the globe alone by boat. This young man’s name is Zac Sunderland. Although he has already made it almost halfway around the world, he has faced many challenges and hardships. “He endured long windless periods as well as violent squalls and turbulent seas.”

Zac Sunderland is barely a sophomore in high school. Is it really good for him to be sail around the world all by himself and just push school to the side? Don’t get me wrong I am all for following our heart and making our dreams come true, but this seems like a lot for an adolescent. This boy can get seriously injured and possibly even killed.

I am definitely not trying to discourage Zac from continuing journey, but I believe some important points should be made. People seem to grow up too fast these days. All kids want to do is get older so they can stay out later and get more privileges. I cannot tell you how many young, young kids I have seen with cell phones. A kindergartener actually told me that she brings a phone with her to school everyday.

What has this world come to? I am amazed by Zac Sundeland’s progress and excited to hear about the remaining leg of his journey. But, is there any point in time when young people will stop trying to grow up so fast?

well, in some way it think the younger generation is sheltered and babyed. Having a cell phone doesn't necessary mean that they are adults. to them it is a neat toy, and for parents it is probably a device that they can use for safety reasons.

considering the other times in history. children would get married as early as 13 and were considered an old maid at 18.
they would get pregnant and work hard,
