I recently got an email from Josh Silver from www.Freepress.net, an organization which pushes for media reform. In it, Silver expresses hope for media reform under President Obama. "The president-elect is a strong supporter of Net Neutrality and universal, affordable Internet access. He is opposed to further consolidation of media ownership, and he is a friend to public broadcasting. Obama's election represents a sea change in leadership that allows us to go from playing defense to offense," Silver says. Free Press started five years ago, as an organization to fight media consolidation. It has since grown into a large grass roots organization focusing on issues like affordable internet, improved journalistic standards, incentives for independent media, and increased funding for Public Broadcasting and NPR.
However, it is not a given that media reform will come under from the Obama Administration. Those of us interested in media reform must continue to be vigilant.
Please, go to www.freepress.net for more information. Media reform might be the most important issue our nation faces. After all, without an informed citizenry, no democratic republic can function. Our Founding Fathers knew the masses needed to be well educated. Please, don't allow Big Media to shut down independent voices, or hard hitting journalists to be silenced.
