why a two party system?

Everyone is aware that our political society is made up of two major parties - but do you know why?
Several reasons include the historical basis of two-party systems, the force of tradition, the electoral system, and an ideological consensus.
Historical basis - the nation started out with two parties: the Federalists and the Anti Federalists. There has always been two sides to every issue, whether or not there are exceptions or conditions involved, everyone with an opinion on the subject is either for or against it.
Force of tradition - American has a two party system because it always has had one. Minor parties, which lack wide political support, have never made a successful showing, so people are reluctant to support them.
The electoral system - Certain features of government - such as single member districts - are designed to favor the two party system, with two major parties.
Ideological consensus - most Americans have a general agreement on fundamental matters / issues. Conditions that would spark several strong rival parties do not exist in the U.S.
Other types of party systems include multiparty systems and single party system, also known as a non partisan democracy. But that's another blog for another time : D

with a historian. One of the points he braught up was that we don't really have a two party system, we've always had third parties, which often get ignored. However, history has shown that third parties often have a role in shaping the policies set forth by the two main parties. there are even examples of third parties becomming one of the main parties, such as the Republicans.
