This experiment really got to me, it took me nearly two pages to write my response and solution to this simulation. It is really mindblowing and though driven when it is done it a group, but one person is good also.
Think of your 10 best friends in the whole wide world and favorite family members including yourself. Now after you think about that, decide one an island that you always wanted to go to. Well guess what now? As part of the simulation, you and your 9 buddies are on your way to paradise.
However, a huge storm comes and sinks the ship and only you and your friends survive. There is a life boat, but there is a problem: ONLY FOUR PEOPLE CAN RIDE IN THE LIFE BOAT!!!!! Plus, you guys can't see land for miles, but you know that you are 3 days from your destination.
How do you decide who stays, and who goes? What happens to the other 6 left to tough it out in the ocean. My teacher did this with us in IB Theory of Knowledge, and it didn't turn out so pretty. Try it out and tell your friends to do it, but make sure they are TRUTHFUL AS POSSIBLE!
Stay frosty guys,
Sir Starks

Ha interesting and fun activity. I actually used to play this game with some of my friends. But for some reason we all transformed into exotic animals when we reached the island and it became a gory version of the lord of flies.
we were all pretty ruthless.
Could you not take turns in the boat? Have everyone take turns between swimming and sitting in the boat? That would be the most effective means.
Or you could have the six that have to swim hang on to the sides of the boat - three to a side so that weight is equally distributed.

A Certain Saint, That is suprisingly the conclusion we came to in class. We also said the people on the side would take off their points to take some weight off and to tie themselves to the side.
Bow.
Why?
Because SIR TRIP said so!
I don't know, but i think your missing the point.
Though fun, The exercise (i think i don't actually know) was meant for you to decide Which ones were either going to be useful or preferrable. Not exactly logical. Though you chose to save everyone, (again i think) you were supposed to try and decided which of your friends you would ideally save, is thier a friend who could help you survive, one that would entertain you the best, and such.
I really enjoy the "what if" games and one of my favorites is "Zombie Attack"
Where you and a group of people decide what would be your strategy to survive a Zombie attack, it is quite entertaining, and i think i wrote a blog about it.
IT is alot of fun!
But that's the trick - save everyone and have all the skills. It's not as if a student is going to have friends who specialize in survival skills 101, lol.

That reminds me of a button:
"You're a great friend, but if zombie's are chasing us, I'm tripping you."
:-D
"What a crazy random happenstance!"
