The movie Clueless, made in 1995, is a modern retelling of the story Emma, by Jane Austen, made into a 1996 movie by Douglas McGrath. The title refers to the main character Emma Wodehouse. There are two things that lead the audience to believe that Emma is rather clueless.
The two things that makes Emma seem clueless are her confused attempts at matchmaking. Her first failed attempt at matchmaking is her attempt to marry her poorer friend Harriet to the well-off parish minister Mr. Elton. In reality Mr. Elton is making obvious attempts to woo Emma. However Emma is so “clueless” that she thinks he is in love with Harriet. Since she thinks she is seeing what she wants to see, Emma encourages Mr. Elton. She thinks she is encouraging his affections for Harriet when in actuality she is leading Mr. Elton to believe that she returns his affections.
Emma’s second failed attempt at matchmaking comes when after realizing the truth of Mr. Elton’s affections, and refusing them, she tries to set up Harriet with the charming Mr. Churchill. At a picnic with Harriet Emma encourages her to consider a certain man as a suitor. Neither of the two woman mentions any specific name only that he came to her rescue. Both women think they are talking about the same man. In fact, Emma is talking about Mr. Churchill and his rescue of Harries from some thieves. At the same time, Harriet thinks they are discussing Mr. Knightley who came to Harriet’s rescue at the ball and danced with her when no one else would. So Harriet thinks Emma is encouraging her affection for Mr. Knightley while Emma is in love with Mr. Knightley herself, but she hasn’t fully realized it yet.
It is obvious that the character Emma Wodehouse is rather clueless. It is thus also obvious that the title of the 1995 movie “Clueless” refers to character Emma Wodehouse. These two points are made clearly obvious by the two examples given above.
