The novel “Emma” is a tale of confusion. In the beginning Emma Woodhouse is pleased with herself for marring her former nurse to a good man. So she determines to set up the parish minister to her friend Harriet. She mistakes his affection for her as affection for Harriet. When she realizes her mistake she refuses him and he leaves town. She then tries to set up Harriet with Mr. Churchill, the nephew of a friend whom they have heard about through his letters to his uncle. Miss. Bates is a poor woman whom Emma treats kindly as a “Charity”. Miss. Fairfax is a friend of Miss Bates who is semi-wealthy. In a moment of anger Emma insults Miss Bates causing Mr. Knightly to question her character. Mr. Elton returns with a wife. Emma very much dislikes Mrs. Elton so she throws her a party so no one will know. Through a humorous twist of miscommunication Emma mistakes Harriet’s affection for Mr. Knightley (whom Emma likes) as affection for Mr. Churchill. When Emma finds out she fears that Mr. Knightley returns Harriet’s affection. When he sees her however he declares that he loves only Emma and the two are married.
