In the movie E.T. the alien E.T. is a fully developed character. Certain aspects of his behavior and appearance lend themselves to his human qualities. They also allow the audience to perceive E.T. as a person and not as a “monster from outer space”. E.T.’s qualities are very different from those the director might have used if that was how he wanted E.T. to be perceived.
E.T.’s physical appearance lends itself to his “human quality”. He does not have more eyes, heads, legs, arms or any other body part than he “ought” to. His appearance is roughly similar to that of a human. “Extra” body parts could have been used by the director to achieve a “monster-like” quality. As it is, his “humanoid” appearance allows the audience to think of him as a person.
There is one behavioral characteristic of E.T.’s that lends itself to his “human quality”. In the beginning we see that the aliens are gardeners and scientists who are on earth only to collect plant samples. This idea of a peaceful mission allows people to think of him as being a person. Carrying weapons or interfering with people would probably lend it self to a “monster-like” quality.
It is clear through the examples above that E.T. is a fully developed character. It is also clear that E.T is meant to be perceived as person. This is made obvious through E.T.’s physical appearance and behavioral characteristics
