Public figures do not always have a moral personal life. Should we vote for a candidate based on their personal life or their chosen platform? It is my opinion that when considering who to vote for we should neither ignore publicized facts about a candidate’s personal life, nor go searching onto their private business, nor vote for them solely based on private lives.
Our decision on who to vote for should not be based entirely on the private lives of the candidates. When voting for a candidate people should consider how the candidates they elect would influence the government and therefore the country. So, to that extent certain aspects of their personal lives should factor into the decision. For instance, it may be common knowledge that the candidate follows a religion you don’t agree with or perhaps you consider an aspect of their life immoral, such as homosexuality or living with someone to whom they are not married. If you think this makes them unqualified to help run the country of if you think their personal beliefs will affect the decision they make then you could vote (or not vote) for them based on that. On the other hand, immorality isn’t against the law and everyone has failings in their personal life. So, if you agree with a candidate's political opinions and your qualm with them relates to their personal faults you should think carefully about deciding to withhold your vote from them. You should consider the personal failing you dislike and how much it would actually affect the decisions they would be making if elected. Also if you decide that who you vote for will be partially determined by the private lives you should realize that they are just that: private. Are certain amount or research can be done and certain questions can be asked, however, at some point we have to realize that we are looking for information about a person’s private business. Information you find about their past may no longer be true of them and they may have changed. On the other hand it may be valid information. So, I’m not saying it’s always bad to hunt up background information, rather, that you should always be careful.
So, in considering a candidate you should neither ignore their personal life nor base your decision on it entirely. Also, you need to carefully consider what it is about their personal life that affects you decision. Lastly, when researching their personal information you should be careful that you’re not being nosy.
