The removal of a monarch from the British system of government would mean the loss of an important part of their culture and society. The Queen represents a longstanding tradition. England has been ruled by a monarch since the year 800 BC. The monarchy of England and later of the United Kingdom has withstood the test of time. Throughout the ages the monarchy has seen many changes, from the transition to an elected parliament, to the signing of the Magna Carta, to the transition to a Constitutional Monarchy with the Glorious Revolution and the English Bill of Rights. With the rise of democracy the UK has witnessed the transfering of power from the monarch to the Houses of Parliament. This process has been largely peacfull, as the monarchy has accepted the transition in its importance from governing to cerimonial overseeing and advising, as sign of its ability to adapt and modernize.
Most importantly, I believe, the monarchy symbolizes the spirit and culture of the United Kingdom. It amply portrays how tradition and modernization are so frequently woven together seamlessly in British culture. The British are forever embracing the future but are not hasty to forget their history or the traditions of their past. The monarch’s power is mostly ceremonial but does also contribute to the nation’s balance of power. The queen is loved by her people. The monarch represents an important and longstanding tradition. To remove the monarchy from the United Kingdom would be a great loss to British culture, society and government.
