Imagine a hallway crowded with people and the nervous chattering of students trying to figure out how to get to their classes. Imagine a heavy bag full of “gently used” textbooks that were bought with the last bit of money that you were able to pull together. And at the bottom of this bag is a key, a key that unlocks the doorway to the new life ahead of you, a.k.a, your dorm room. The dorm room is a symbol of independence, life on your own, getting ready for the real and all the problems, hardships, and wonderful experiences that come along with it. These are the feelings and experiences that I cannot wait to feel. I am looking forward to that first day of college, no matter how nerve racking and terrifying it may be. This is the day and these are the years that will dramatically shape my life for the future. My heart races for the time when I get to say goodbye to family and board a plane heading for college and my future.
Spending at least four years at a college or university learning about myself, my peers, and the world around me will tremendously prepare me for my future in the “real world.” My classes and the students and professors that I will interact with will get me ready for life after college. Attending college will allow me to interact with many kinds of people with different beliefs, cultures, and feelings. With the knowledge that there are different ways of life and thought, I will be prepared to skillfully interact with people when I am thrust into the “real world.” In a college setting, I will learn to interact with others. College is the last bit of shelter that I will receive before I am let loose to fend for myself. It is the last time that I will be coddled and allowed to make mistakes. Once I graduate from college, I will be on my own, there will be no huge towering school that I can run to and tell all my problems to and hope for answers. College is the place in which I will learn some of the most important life lessons.
I live in a world today that is very different from that of my parents. In this generation, if I want to be successful in life I need at least a four-year degree from some college. Whether we like it or not, a good job and a steady income is the only way to have a truly successful and happy life. A good education is the foundation that will build me a good and stable life. I do not want to limit myself when there are so many opportunities available to me to attend college and get an education. Financial aid, grants, student loans, and scholarships are some of the easiest ways to raise the funds to pay for college. I am currently using all of these tactics to get myself an education that I can be proud of. I want to graduate college and be able to use the education that I earned to make a life for myself.
My father was a bright student, he always did his work and tried his hardest, but his parents never encouraged him to apply to a four-year college or university. He ended up graduating from high school and attending the junior college right down the street from where he was born and raised where he received his associate’s degree in business. Now that he has grown up and has a family of his own, he wishes that he got the full college experience- leaving home, living in the dorms, experiencing life away from family, and having the chance to learn about the world in an entirely new perspective. My dad wishes the best for me. He wants my life to be better than his; he wants to give me opportunities that he was not able to experience himself. I am thankful for my dad, he pushes me to strive for more, he makes me want to succeed and create a life that is wonderful and worth living. I want to attend college to make my family proud and to show them that I can make a difference and accomplish something important.
College is the number one priority on my list. Secondary education is necessary for success; it will prepare me for the future and the role I will play in the world. College is a time in my life that I am not going to miss. The memoirs of my college experience will forever be instilled in my mind. This is the time in my life when I will grow up and mature to be the person that I will become.
