Come What May

So, we have elected Barack Hussien Obama as the 44th president of the United States. This is a great feat for our country to have accomplished so soon. Now, what we have to do, along with the rest of the world, is sit back, wait, and watch.

President-elect Obama is the most liberal senator currently in Congress. This may become a problem. If he's like Jimmy Carter and his intentions are good, but some of the things he does don't really make sense to most people, then the country is safe. I'm just worried about the whole sitting-down-without-preconditions thing. Here, I have not done my research, but I know that Jimmy Carter got a Nobel Peace Prize, but did he sit down with middle eastern leaders without preconditions?

Also, Obama's policies may have to change. Now that he is getting briefed on the true status of our nation and what's really going on in the world under all of the media and conspiriacies, he may leave our troops in the Middle East longer than he intended. Iraq, I think that we could be in there for about three to six more months, but the major place that we need to be watching is Afghanistan. For those of you that read Khaled Hossieni's books "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns", you know the history of Afghanistan for roughly the past 40 years. Afghanistan has gone through so much turmoil and uncertainty in the past three-and-a-half decades, with about four governement switches; from the monarchs and parliament to Russian occupation to the Taliban reign to now the US occupation. If Obama draws the military out of there now, the circumstances in Afghanistan will be almost unbearable for its citizens. More civil war will break out. Women will have fewer freedoms (so to all of you feminists out there who want to pull out-how would YOU like it if the nation that made it able for you to do whatever you want suddenly left and you had to go back to the days of the Taliban?)

That's all for right now. I have many more points, coming soon!

Hoping for the best in the next four years,
Alyssa

Sitting down without preconditions is just saying, "We disagree, but let's figure out where our common interests lie and work something out."

Setting preconditions is like saying, "We don't like your rules. Play by our rules and THEN we'll talk to you about why we're right. If you don't play by our rules, we're not going to play with you."

I agree with you. The war is probably a lot more complicated than most people can understand. I'm sick of people who complain about the war but don't have any better suggestions. So many people just want immediate gratification, but don't understand the consequences.
