An Introduction, I Guess...

Hello! I guess I should introduce myself here. My name is Rose F. I am a freshman at Rutgers SAS, and am enrolled in Douglass Residential College as well.

I never know exactly what I should say when introducing myself places. Should I mention that I am a chocoholic? Do I say how I earned my Girl Scout Gold Award after an entire summer spent selling my soul to the works of Shel Silverstein for children's poetry workshops? Can I start an introduction right off the bat with my political views, my goals in life, my current moments of stress? Should I warn you that since it is November, I will be a little crazy?( It's National Novel Writing Month, and I want to write fifty thousand words of fiction before the month is done.)

The point is, sometimes, this kind of stuff is awkward, isn't it? We never know exactly what to say, and sometimes its harder online. When you see someone face to face, you can see their reaction. Right now, all I see is a screen. I don't know if you are frowning and thinking "this girl is a freak" or "she seems awesome" or "wow, she's weird" (of course, I embrace weirdness, so that opinion is fine)...

Trying out a blog is tough. I think the hardest part is starting it. What do I say to catch your interest? Do I start off with an immeadiate rant about some hot topic, some big current issue, some fantastic current event? Should I ride the wave of excitement, and mention how thrilled I was to be able to vote, and to be a part of and witness such amazing American history? Or should I say something about how I want to raise awareness to problems about self mutilation, and how it is not always an attention getting stunt? Do I just talk about new things I've learned in Archaeology or how stressful Expository Writing is? Or would you rather hear about the articles I've read about feminism in Issues In Women's Leadership? I never know: What do I want to talk about, and why do you want to hear it.

So that's the theme to this first blog entry: the awkwardness of the first entries of an online journal, a blog, those first few posts after joining a forum, the whole concept of awkwardness when you try to give a good first impression. I'll try to write a better one later. Hopefully it will give you a better impression of me than this one, which shows my rambling, random side that never knows what to say...

One of the cool things about blogging here is that it is actually a progressive activity. No matter how you do it. As people respond, or don't respond when you thought they would, you get feedback, and if you're perceptive, it sharpens your awareness of your effect on the world. Great experience if you want to be a novelist.

Nice to meet you, and I think everything you mentioned as far as issues that concern you are very interesting, and even seem to be original to this site. I'll be checking your blog frequently.
