Grassroots is the most powerful way to make change

I have been quite excited since learning the outcome of the election. My mind has been buzzing with possibilities and even the colors of the falling leaves look more beautiful after learning it. I am so proud to be an American after this election. A black man is president. I don’t think I ever believed that could happen in the country. And it happened, I think, because of individuals, enough individuals coming together. We are incredibly powerful, and I love the momentum created when people work together.
I have learned, in my time as a social worker and brief but intense stint as a door canvasser that individual grassroots support is the best, the only, the most effective way to make permanent social change. Permanent changes like that do not trickle down, as so many corporate models of management would have us believe, but it comes from the bottom up. Events such as this renew both my faith in the bottom up idea as well as my commitment to stay in touch with it and help it along
America has just proved that she is the more powerful nation in the world. If she can create a change like this, anything – anything – is possible.
