Psychologists view love as a cognitive and social phenomenon. Every psychological perspective has a different view on the subject. Some might look at it from the brain, some by reactions, and some even by genetics, but every perspective connects at some point.
A psychologist studying from the Neuroscientist perspective might look at the brain and see how it is changing as you experience this emotion. The neuroscientists will look at the increase or decrease of hormones in the body and mind. From an Evolutionist perspective, the psychologist might search back into time and figure out how love has helped for the survival of the human species. Looking at love from a Behavior genetics perspective, they psychologist would investigate how genes and certain things in the environment influence this feeling and how each contribute to it.
On the other hand, a Psychodynamic psychology will say that love is a feeling as a result of unfulfilled wishes and desires, things that we bury because they are too painful or simply because we do not want to deal with them at the moment. While the psychodynamic perspective buries the feeling, the Behavioral finds it somewhat rewarding. Someone looking at love from a behavioral perspective might notice body language and gestures such as blushing and analyze why this happens.
From the Cognitive perspective, researchers might look at the fact that when an individual is in love, they are constantly thinking about it. They might study the way the whole process works, from beginning to end. On the other hand, a Social-cultural researcher will consider the individual’s race and ethnicity and compare to someone with a different background and see if the cultures and situations affect the behavior of an individual.
Love is an abstract feeling; it is neither palpable nor predictable. It can be studied from a variety of perspective and a variety of researchers but at the end, it all comes back to the same feeling, it is simply love.
