“Because McCain is this and McCain is that. He is too old. He is going to die; we do not want someone like Sarah Palin to be the next in line for presidency!”—I am so tired of ignorant people saying things without supporting their statements. In a school where I am in the minority of Republicans, I find it hard to engage in a conversation concerning politics with those who are not in favor of my political party.
The most frequent claim I hear around campus is that McCain is too old, and he has a “history of cancer”. I believe McCain knows what he is doing, and if he had such an enormous risk of dying, the last thing he would do, is run for president of the United States. This “history of cancer” has not stopped him at any time from pursuing his job as Senator of Arizona. On the other hand, if we are going to bring up risks, let’s not forget that as the first black U.S president in history, Senator Obama—if elected, would run a historical risk of assassination by racists. This was brought to mind by the incident in which two white supremacist skinheads were arrested in Tennessee for plotting the assassination of Senator Obama.
But all these are simply unsubstantiated remarks. Let’s get back to real issues and focus on two of them: economy and foreign policy. There are tried and true ideas which make this country the greatest. It is fashionable nowadays to focus on the negative aspects of America’s culture, government, and history. Without denying that America has its faults, as all countries do, I believe it still represents—as it did in the great Republican president Lincoln’s famous phrase, “The last best hope on earth.” McCain is the candidate who stands for keeping America this way. He fights to polish the nation’s mischief, unlike his opponent, who only talks about “change, change and change.” Is EVERYTHING we have in our country so bad that it needs to be changed? No, it just needs the right command. McCain knows that there have been many abuses in the economic system, and he is aware of the corruption and greed that predominates in the system. However, the system itself –capitalism- is what created the immense prosperity we enjoy today. We just need to clean it up—and clean it up with energy and determination he will! He has the record to prove it.
However, the other side wants to launch an attack on capitalism by raising taxes on the business sector. This will make businesses simply pick up and go to another country. America has always been the friendliest country to business, and it has paid off. It is very disturbing to hear the opponent refer to business in such a negative way. Obama’s views on small business, plus his proposal on taxes, consists only on taking money away from the rich, to give it to the poor. "Senator Obama is running to be Redistributionist in Chief. I'm running to be Commander in Chief. Senator Obama is running to spread the wealth. I'm running to create more wealth. Senator Obama is running to punish the successful. I'm running to make everyone successful," McCain said.
Lets think abut it. Not everyone that makes more than 250,000 dollars was born into a rich family, in fact this is rare. The majority of the people that get 250,000 yearly have worked hard to get to where they are, and these people already pay enough money as it is for someone to come and tell them that they have to give their money to someone else. The solution to balance the economic differences in our country is not to give money to the poor—chances are, the average American will spend it on unnecessary things such as a new T.V, clothes, or drinks. The answer is to find a way to educate these people and motivate them to succeed. Give opportunity to the poor, not unearned money.
Concerning Foreign Policy, Senator Obama wants a complete change. He calls unfair and brutal those governments that we have been friends with; while on the other hand, he wants to sit down and discuss ideas with the actual brutal and unfair governments such as Iran, Cuba, and others who have proven to be enemies of our country. McCain’s position is to keep America strong by standing up to governments like Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Russia, and by supporting countries like Colombia; countries that share our values. In Iran, McCain pushed for the military surge which has finally proved a break-through in bringing stability and security to the people of that nation. Obama stubbornly refuses to approve that surge—even while admitting that it worked.
Whatever the results of the election might be, John McCain is one of the finest human beings who ever ran for president of the United States. His record as a prisoner in the Vietnam War—in which he passed the opportunity to be released in order to stand in solidarity to his fellow prisoners—is an example of exceptional courage. His record as a senator who refuses to play the game, who never sacrifices his principles to political expediencies, speaks for itself. He said recently he’d rather lose an election than have his country lose a war. He knows what is really important to the country. With his long experience, he has built a record of working successfully with both Republican and Democrats, and reaching our to other countries’ leaders by traveling and meeting with them as well.
