I cast my vote this morning, and I really struggled with this one, dear reader. I struggled with deciding whether I should vote for the candidate that I thought would be good for my country or the one that would be more beneficial for my family (myself?) and their interests.
Should I be looking out for my own personal interests or the greater social interests, the candidate that I believe will be better for the greater social good? But if I’m voting someone I think will keep things the way they are and I think the way things are is bad, shouldn’t that change?
Then this begs the question – Are my personal interests not aligned with greater social interests? What do I think about that? Am I merely conflicted with this decision because I’m a social worker? Do social problems keep me employed, like some of my more disgruntled clients say?
I realize that this post is a little stream-of-consciousness, however, as you can see, dear reader, this was a difficult decision. Even as I was coloring in my choice, my inner debate was raging. This speaks, I think, to a greater question about why we make the choices we make, even our (my) motivations for choices.
What do you think?
Who is going to look out for me?
