Justice System Part II

Last night was the trial. Two girls were charged with stealing about 250 dollars worth of make up products from a store. Both girls received community service, though the girl who chose items only received 2 days, where the girl who did the stealing received 3 days. Both girls are subject to search and seizure for the next 30 days and must write a letter of apology to said store. I feel the jury was justified in making these choices in sentencing.
For my part, I found Peer Court to be an extremely gratifying activity that provided me with rare insight into the justice system. I am hoping for a chance to serve next as a juror and then as a "Tobacco Court Judge". All of the students who participated, (except the two accused) had a great time and want to do it again. That said, I strongly recommend taking the opportunity should it ever arise to you. It only took about 2 hours of my time and a got 10 hours worth of community service for and experience I would have enjoyed just as much without the credit.
Also, I mentioned earlier that I was concerned this might result in a miscarriage of justice, but now I feel that this was justice. Two opposing sides with equal experience and prep time argued their cases in front of a jury made up of these girls' peers. Both sides were given the opportunity to call as many witnesses as they liked and ask any questions that seemed appropriate. The judge never interfered except to direct the proceedings. Both girls were given an opportunity to give the jury their sides and the jury was allowed to deliberate in the jury room. I feel the jury came back with a fair verdict, and as they deliberated for a long time, I know they took great pains to make sure all was fair.
