The Lovely Bones is a novel with strong emotions that will knock you off your feet. Author Alice Sebold crosses the line most authors don’t. Writing about death and rape from the dead girl Susie Salmon’s point of view. The Lovely Bones is a novel filled with tragedy yet hopes that things will eventually get better.
Susie Salmon, 14, is murdered Winter of 1973. Death isn’t the end for Susie. As she adjusts to life in this so-called heaven, she painfully watches life on earth move on with without her. Torn between two worlds, Susie finds it hard to move on. She watches her friends making assumptions about her disappearance, her grieving family, and her killer. Susie watches as her killer as he covers his tracks, always staying ahead of the police investigation. Susie, feeling alone in her heaven, desires nothing more than to be living on earth again. Bitter-sweetly she watches her family and friends move on without her and she fears they will forget her. Each character deals with the loss of Susie in different ways and it changes everything for this close knit community.
The Lovely Bones was a fresh of breath air compared to the story lines of other books. Sebold’s vision was clearly original but so well written that it has become a brilliant masterpiece. Ms. Sebold’s vision of the afterlife and death had me wondering if that’s what its really like after death. The Lovely Bones is nothing short than unbelievably amazing.
