PROP 8 (YES...........or no???)

I am not Christian, and I guess I identify myself as liberal, if anything. I am not extreme in favoring any one side, but I think that allowing gay marriage to be taught in school is something that is not right. I mean, why bring marriage lessons to eight year olds? Shouldn't they be learning about fractions and Egyptian civilization? As I mentioned before, I am not Christian, and I am not conservative, but I believe that marriage is only between a man and a woman, not a man and man, or woman and woman. Marriage is something that is sacred, and not simply a legal contract (as some people have mentioned before). Some may bring up the fact that approximately 50% of the marriages in the United States have, or will, end in divorce. Yet, is that a valid reason to give up trying? Just try to keep an open mind and think of it that way. Try to weight the benefits of marriage (mentally, emotionally, physically, financially), and make your decision. I am definitely not against lesbians and gays living together, that is their choice. But nature is not something that intended two people of the same gender to procreate.

Two points: 1) Prop 8 has nothing to do with gay marriage be taught in schools. The entire change it proposes amounts to a one-line change in the California Constitution, which reads, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." That's it. 2) If you are going to teach kids about the institution of marriage, why shouldn't you teach them about ALL of the marriages that the institution includes? It is never a good thing, in my humble opinion, to encourage ignorance by willfully denying students access to information about the world in which they live.

That is a question for parents and educators to answer, and one that has nothing to do with taking away the basic rights of citizens, which is what Prop. 8 actually does.

If you aren't a christian conservative, then why are you so concerned about marriage as a "sacred" (a uniquely religious term) institution? Historically speaking, marriage IS a legal contract, and has been throughout the whole of recorded human history. It has NOT always been "between a man and a woman" and religion is a relative late-comer to the game. The christian religion didn't get involved in the practice of marriage until at least the 10th Century C.E., and didn't actually start performing marriages until several hundred years later. The idea that marriage is a religious union between one man and one woman only is extremely unusual, in historical terms.

This is completely irrelevant. Gay people getting married won't make heterosexual marriages any more or any less likely to fail.

This might surprise you, but marriage and procreation are two different things. One doesn't have to get married to procreate, and one does not have to procreate after one is married. Also, if you're going to appeal to "nature," then you might want to open your eyes and actually look at the natural world around you. Homosexuality in the animal kingdom is a well-documented phenomenon, and most higher animals (and virtually all primate species) engage in homosexual behavior.
