We are entering a very important time in history. This is a time period that my grandparents, and probably many of your parents and grandparents never thought they would have seen. This is a time period that black people have long deserved. We, the citizens of the United States, may just very well have a black president. He has already made history by being nominated, and even the day of his speech was monumental due to its historical significance. He has the walk, the talk, and the initiative to back up his words. He has the charisma and spirit that hasn't been seen, probably since Clinton, and Kennedy before that. According to CNN, when polled "Seventy-two percent of white Americans and 61 percent of black Americans" said that the nation is ready for a black president. But is that empirical evidence enough proof to really say that the US is ready? Is it skewed? Is it sincere? Is the United States of America truly ready for a black president? I leave that question open to be answered.
Recently there was an attack on Obama supporters. Indirectly. In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania a 20 year old white woman stated that she was assaulted (physically and sexually) by a 6'4" black man outside of a bank. He supposedly robbed her, man-handled her, chastised her for supporting McCain, and then carved the letter "B" on her face with a dull blade. Crazy right?! Makes it seem as though Obama supporters are crazed and violent and will go to any means to support their candidate. However, that story was completely falsified by the woman who "suffered from a mental illness" (by the way, the "B" was carved backwards). Bull. That is just the media's way of covering up a good story for a white woman. Not to sound racist at all, but had that been a black woman who lied about a white man attacking her she would have been exploited and talked about to the fullest extent until everyone knew who she was. However, I digress. The point of the matter is, how ready can this country be for a black president if we still have lunatics mutilating themselves just to make a statement? And that's not the only attack on Obama's candidacy. There have been racist attacks, attacks from FOX, and smears on Michelle Obama. Why can't people just let this man run? No one speaks about Governor Palin's pregnant daughter. No one spoke about McCain to such the extent they speak about Obama. So why not just treat the man like the next candidate? In my opinion it's because he's black. But please, prove me wrong. I am open to rebuttals.

I agree with you. If America is not ready then America will become ready when Obama enters the oval office.
At least people are not rioting the streets and burning down buildings and robbing gun stores because a black man is running for office.
I think America is civilized compared to other countries. There have been no causalities.
What gets me angry is the terrorist labels Obama receives.
Obviously we are not yet ready for a muslim.
I digress on the grounds that I question whether or not Obama is truly a black man. Yes, the color of his skin in undeniable. However, he was raised with his white mother and white grandmother. His black relatives were not even a part of his life. Also, he didn't even grow up in the United States. He grew up in Indonesia. He went to Hawaii in highschool. The majority of his childhood was spent outside of the United States. So he didn't grow up with the same pains that the rest of the blacks had to endure in our grandparents and parents time. So I question whether he's qualified to be considered a REAL black man.

Hawaii is one of the 50 United States of America.
I guess you could ask his wife if she thinks he's "black enough," since she seems to meet your standard of truly "black." I find this argument interesting and amusing. Is this all you've got left? Everything else has been disproved, so you ask if he's black enough? Funny. You might win. Maybe.

No, I'm not grasping at straws or anything. I'm simply stating that whereas he portrays himself as this black man who's basically the savior of the black people, he hasn't been brought up in the way the blacks in this country have been. Therefore, he cannot empathize with their feelings any more than you or I could.

He's not out there talking about black issues or white issues. He's talking about U.S. issues. The majority of his platform focuses on the middle class, which is not a color distinction. I don't understand this need to compartmentalize people. It is possible to be both black and a scholar, black and a politician, black and a leader. I think most people will get this on election day.

Using your logic that a person who is not black cannot empathize with our feelings, I request that YOU not speak for black people concerning Obama or anything else.
And when has he portrayed himself as the savior of black people?
