Oh, the Joys of Applying to College

Tagged:

Well, its that time of year... it's getting colder, Halloween is just around the corner, and many high school seniors are pulling all-nighters to get their college applications in by November 1st. Yes, that's right, I said November first. Now, technically, most of the deadlines are much later in the year, but if you are a high school senior and want scholarships and early decisions, you're applying right now. As anyone who has ever tried to balance fall sports and activities with senior classes and juggle applications and scholarships all at the same time can tell you, this is a very stressful time of year for the senior class. No matter how far ahead you think you've gotten, there is always something else that needs to be done, and soon. This can lead to rapidly compiled letters of recomendation, hurriedly composed essays and piles and piles of college mail. Depending on how many schools one is applying to, it can become quite overwhelming. There are many passwords to remember and many papers and transcript requests to keep track of. Also, if you are like me, there are many essays to write--I can't seem to make myself write a generic one to fit all my schools. Also, each application requires so much information that it becomes a tedious task for the students filling them out. Because of that, they might contain errors or leave out important information. Many senoirs struggle with readjusting their pictures of their senior year with the reality. They thought that they could claim senioritis, whip up a few applications and relax or party. Yeah right. After applications are in there are still scholarships, and perhaps most importantly, the ultimate decision must be made.

That's right. You must decide what college to go to. For some students, this is a simple choice to make. Some of them have one particular college they fell in love with. They know which school they want to attend, and are only applying to a few others for back up. Others, like myself, are not so lucky. We have many choices to make, and not much time to make them in. The college that each student chooses to attend definitely has an impact on his or her life, but perhaps not in the way that he or she expected it to.

You have completely just expressed the emotions and stress i am going through. i keep telling myself if i could just get these applications over with My life would be wonderful

i am applying to eight colleges, and i do not have a clue which college i will attend.

Don't worry. At some point it'll click in your mind. Something along the lines of "Why on Earth did I apply there?" or "Wow I really like the feel of this place". I applied/was accepted to 3 and decided on one that was convenient in location, more affordable, and had a more comfortable feel than the other two choices, because it was in a more suburban area than a city area. The choice will come to you, and you'll feel very relieved at the end of this school year.

Graduate school admissions are much, much worse. And much, much more competitive.

Don't worry too much about college admissions. If you apply to a good mix of them, you'll get accepted somewhere. If it's not your dream school, you can go and rock your first year in the school you got accepted to, and then apply as a transfer student to your dream school. That might help make up any deficiencies you might have the first time you apply.
