Students of 2008

With the 2008 election becoming one of the most important elections in history it is important that people register to vote. With early voting available in some states it makes it easier for people to vote. All over the U.S. Students are encouraged to vote with some voter information available in colleges nation wide.

Why vote some ask? With issues such as unemployment, or nations economy and people loosing their homes due to not being able to afford them, there is at least one of these issues that has a direct effect on everyone. Many think that voting has little impact on who eventually becomes the president, but, I feel better knowing that I have voted and I have made a difference in ensuring that our country has the best president. One person one vote can make a difference. If you chose not to vote then you can't complain about who is president or any other position since you didn't make an effort to change it.

In countries such as Iraq for the first time in 1,000 years they were able to vote. We live in a country where we have the right to vote where in other counties we have other ways of choosing a leader. Some are inheritances, or Divine appointment, Monarchy where one person rules. Voting is a rare privilege and others don't respect it. In Iraq people would fear being shot at once they went to vote. The soldiers nationwide from various ethnic cultures, races, and social status gather together to help this nation.

American citizens are privileged beyond what they realize. We don't live in a place where our head would be chopped off if we insulted our leader. We live in a place where we have 50 choices of coffee while people in another countries lacks enough food, shoes, clothing, shelter.

Although I agree with much of your sentiment, I think you have an illusion of choice, especially in the supermarket. I forget the statistic, but I read recently In EAT HERE by Halweil that about six food conglomerates own much more than half of all the brands in a local grocery. It's good to be optimistic, and to point out our CHOICES at the ballot, but it's equally important to balance the equation and be realistic, tweetyind. I believe corporate America and its relationship to our federal system has effectively limited our choices there.

The commission on presidential debates, for example, has limited debates and yet we still believe in the popular wisdom that anyone with decent ideas has a right in our national dialogue... that won't be true until we stop believing this myth and demand change through good writing and collaboration. Keep up the good fight!
