Take Nothing For Granted: The Importance of Time

Tagged:

Time is going by quickly. There seems to be less time in a day, less time during the weekend, and less time to get done the things on the "to do" list. Too often, we take time for granted.

We look up and time has passed so quickly; suddenly, we realize that we have wasted time and energy on people, things, circumstances, and undue worry outside of our control; in addition, we grieve ourselves over missed opportunities to laugh and enjoy life.

I know. Midterms, finals and papers are due. Birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, parties, practices, interviews, bills, obligations, deadlines, and elections are knocking at your door. It all feels overwhelming and stressful.

Enjoy being a student. We are all students, with a different curriculum, set of goals, a mission and a desire towards achievement. It is not just limited to an education, but to the many expectations that are set for us and by us.

We each face some challenge. Some challenges are common and shared. Other challenges are varying and involve the daily issues that directly affect our ability to focus, concentrate and dedicate all of our time and energy to the things we would like to get done.

We worry about the health of our aging and sick relatives and friends, how to afford going to college, whether a parent is losing or will lose a job, friends who have gotten into trouble, deaths of close relatives or friends, finishing papers, assignments, or work loads and whether or not a job will be available once college is completed.

We do not want to worry but it is hard in the current state of our nation. Unfortunately, time seems to unfairly corner us and the unexpected things in life force us to delay the process of going forward.

Time is not measured by the seconds, the minutes or the hours ticking on any clock, watch or sun dial. Time is best measured by what has happened, what will happen, what must happen, what can happen and what we cannot avoid from happening.

If we measure the happenings of things that have occurred in a cycle of any lifetime, it will show the depth of time and how similar it is to the changing of seasons of weather and the weathering of life.

In this lifetime, we are challenged by deadlines, expectations of others and ourselves, new life, new death, losses, gains, success, failure, rejection, acceptance, tolerance, and perspectives. Each one of these are injected into our lives in ways that we cannot measure or explain how it will truly affect our experiences or place in life, especially at this moment.

We are human beings first. Sometimes, I think we forget that we are people and that we are not robots, machines or computers. We are not automatic. We require rest, peace, moments of meditation and rejuvenation.

Sometimes, we must ask for help, receive it and appreciate it. If we do not take this time our for ourselves, it can be overwhelming, self-destructing or detrimental to our health and well-being.

If you are like me, everybody relies on you for help, guidance, and assistance. You may be a caregiver to disabled or sick person such as a child, an ailing or aging parent, grandparent, sibling, spouse, partner, friend, or someone close to you.

You need to take some time to take care of yourself or eventually it will affect your ability to achieve whatever goals you have set for a job or with school, with taking care of your own health, the ability to concentrate and the ability to bounce back on track.

I know it is hard. When you have to care for a household, a specific situation, a person, multi-tasking with making it all work smoothly, and be the in-between for everyone and everything, it can difficult. Have no regrets; it is all worth it. It is the most rewarding and best investment that you will ever make in your life. It may not seem that way at first, but it works out. It prepares you for something much greater.

Do not wish to do anything, but be able to do better. Enjoy this stage in your life and let life take its natural course. Do not rush your life because when it starts to come faster than you want, there is no turning back time. This is not the movies, the daytime soaps, the fairy tales or comic books. This is a life with a cycle, with stages, with reflective mirrors and without a stop clock. Make decisions that will be best for you tomorrow, not just today.

In the midst of this journey, do not forget to enjoy your life and that time is moving right this moment. Do not waste your time.

I had never thought about time weighted and measured by happenings, but it is true.
Great Blog.

I especially like this line:

"Do not wish to do anything, but be able to do better. "

Nice work. A good reminder to stop and look around once in a while.
