Aaaaaaah, the blogosphere, a virtual place without care or consequence, where journalistic integrity and objective truth goes out the window and is steadily replaced by personal opinion and subjective reality. Not to say that it's necessarily a BAD thing, as I'm not really in the business of ascribing moral characteristics to things. Heck, I'm new to this whole "blogging" thing, so I figure I should reserve judgment until I've dug myself deep enough into the digital underbelly of society. I'm a fairly opinionated person, anyhow, so this shouldn't be too rough of an introduction. I'll consider this the "pilot" of the Wiggles blog here on ProgressiveU, so I'll be sure to set the stage for the rest of the entries to come.
To start, I am currently a student at THE University of California at Los Angeles and I originally hail from the Los Angeles area. The name "Wiggles" is of special significance to me, but seeing as though I'm just getting into this thing and I have absolutely no control over who sees this, I will withhold further explanation until a later occasion. Politically, I'm somewhere left of center, though I'm not exactly sure where. I support Senator Barack Obama for president, as I was turned on to him a couple years ago and believe that, at the very least, he would make for a stronger and much more inspiring leader than "that other guy". I am a proponent of social paternalism, that being the belief that those in a society who have the most should give to those who have the least. Every "young person" I run into nowadays (as if I, myself, am not a young person) seems to have this affinity for libertarianism, which would be great in a perfect world in which everyone was born onto a completely clean slate, but such isn't the case (I'll save the explanation for a later entry). Economically, I believe in trickle-up economics, and I view that which can be referred to as "Reagonomics" as simply a philosophy based on the appeasement of the corporate owners of this great nation.
Environmentally, I believe in global warming and support those who are trying to halt it, though it will certainly take more than a philanthropic urge to get Americans, and people of the world in general, off of their behinds to do something; there must be some sort of practical incentive, i.e. spending less money on energy.
Ultimately, though, I am an open-minded person and I always try to explore and understand both sides of an issue before making up my mind completely. I look forward to engaging the digital world in thoughtful discussion from here on out.
