The n-word is it ok if you change a vowel?

Ok now I do not want to offend anyone, but I had a question I really never thought of. How is it ok for someone to say the n-word to themselves of someone else? Now I have two biracial cousins, and love them to death! When I hear someone say this word I take automatic offense to it. They argue on my bus that by changing the one vowel from an e to an a it is ok and is not offensive to say. How can someone say such a thing! I tried asking my aunt, who had the children and she tried her best to explain it to me. Now as you know I am white so maybe I have no say on the matter. But what I do know is the definition of the n-word: it means Negro in Spanish and French. But in English it means stupid. So now I ask the question are people who change one vowel that means nothing stupid? I take offense to any way it is being used not matter what, but others would disagree with me.

So now I ask you, is it ok for a person to call someone else the n-word even if they change a vowel? I think society needs to go back in time and see how this word was used, because it is a nasty and hateful word to use both back then and now.

It doesn't matter if they use the "n" word with a replaced vowel. it doesn't matter if they say it. let them say that word at job interview. let them say it in formal meetings. I suppose the reaction to the word would be negative even if a vowel is switch. so no it is not okay to use the "altered" word.

Your right I never really thought of that! Good point.

Maybe this is just leftover political correctness that's useless to society. That's what I think. Heck, it's just a word, and maybe people get a little bent out of shape about it. The only "white" equivalent I could think of is "white trash" or "cracker", and those are pretty humorous in my opinion.

White trash and cracker are not comparable to the "n" word. First of all these words are used in everyday discourse, unlike the "n" word. second, the meaning of the "n" word has historical background and that was the power label and word that enslaved their history. white trash and cracker do not hold chains or correlations to unjust history. a better equivalent that would probably provoke the same emotion as would the "n" would probabaly be Fucking worthless bitch, go fuck yourself.( all of this said in an angry serious tone.)

I am guessing you will not take this offensive because they are just words.

Good points, keanan. You're right, those words are more hatefully said than cracker (which still sounds just plain ridiculous to me). And the whole "n" word having a bad history is an important point as well.

Still, I don't think we should let words hold us back. Y'know, that whole "sticks and stones" thing. If we can all learn to not take these hateful things seriously, they lose their power over us.

How can you not take hateful things seriously when people use them to hurt others? Personally, i don't like the n word, not just because of the word itself, but because when a person's said it to me, it's usually because he or she wants to demean me the worse way possible. So, words don't hurt, but intentions do.

You need to remember that the n-word was used as a hate word and should be taken as offense. You need to look up the history of the n-word Bridge, because I don't think you quite understand the meaning and hate behind that word.

I don't think it's okay. Even if it's not the same word, its the same meaning, the same intent to insult.
