I am a true patriot. My definition of patriotism is loving my country and supporting what is best for the nation, not blind obedience to my country's government. That is different definition than most people have. People tend to confuse "country" with "current government."
It seems to be a relatively recent change. People seem to be have conditioned to take our leaders words as truth all the time anymore. Maybe it was the fear tactics Bush Jr used to get reelected that finally did it. Maybe it was the "Patriot" act. That was such a funny thing. They very well couldn't call it the "stripping of your rights" act. They needed it to get public support. "Oh,my! You're NOT in favor of the Patriot act that will save us from the terrorists and ourselves?! You must be a terrorist because you surely are not a patriot!"
Sean and I actually did a commercial today for friend, along with several other people. We were asked why we were voting. I had a long list. Because I can. Because it's my right. Because it's my responsibility. Because my country deserves better. Because I demand a change in Washington. Because it gives me a right to bitch later. That one didn't get on the list, but even if my candidates don't get in, I can say "I voted for the other person." If you keep your views to yourself on election day, keep them to yourself. A true patriot would not ignore the rights we're given to improve our nation.
I was going through some quotes earlier, and I found a few that I believe really make my point:
"They that would give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Ben Franklin
"None are so hopelessly enslaved as those who falsely believe they are free." - Johann Von Goethe
"A time comes when silence is betrayal." - Martin Luther King Jr
"If a Nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be... If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to be informed." - Thomas Jefferson
And one I've never heard anyone quote when talking about patriotism:
"When you feel you have right on your side, you can do some pretty horrible things." - former Weathermen member, Brian Flanagan
I think it's our responsibility as patriots, regardless of how you want to define it, to do what you can to become educated on issues, vote knowing the truth, and fight for what we see as wrong. I'm talking about activism. Even voting is a form of activism. Standing up with protesters is inspiring. It is our RIGHT to attempt to change policies.
I obviously don't agree with any kind of violence, and activists using violence is the worse. I do understand it though. As I knocked on doors, people would ignore me. The apathy is disturbing. Sometimes I want to slap some sense into people, but I never would. Probably.

Nationalism and jingoism are NOT patriotism!
"Never go with a hippy to a second location."

I agree with ediblewoman that too many people think they need to be nationalistic in order to be patriotic. Criticizing one's country or government can actually be the highest type of patriotism, because it means you care about the country and want to see it change into something even better.
