Television good or bad?

I was watching television with my 7 year old cousin one day and we happened to be watching her favorite Disneychannel TV series, Hannah Montana. She's totally been obsessed about her and would even try to imitate the way she behaves such as questioning the authority of her parents. I didn't really take this seriously since I've gone through the phase in which television shows affect childhood development. The only difference was that I grew up watching wholesome cartoons to name a few...Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Doug, etc where the extremest of all vulgar words was "shut up."

What really bothered me was when my cousin started to be very cautious about her weight at such a young age. She would started comparing herself with the character Miley Cyrus...comments such as "I'm fat" or "Why can't I be as thin and as popular as her?" I was extremely shocked...I mean, I never became sensitive about my weight until I was a freshman in high school let alone a 7 year old!

This just shows how modern television series such as Hannah Montana can severely affect a child's development both physically and emotionally. Young children these days are exposed to such entertainment that is not necessarily appropriate for their view. The fact that these shows are mainly coming from Disney Channel aggravates me the most. Disney is recognized as a company that provides inspiration and helps children dream...instead, they are providing shows that cause children to be less confident in themselves. Whatever happened to the good old days of 7 year old activities where they make hot dogs out of playdoh and play with barbie dolls?

Just something the society should really think about.

the intelligence in TV is dropping i agree. the things that the younger generations are being exposed to is almost sickening when you look at the deeper messages being pointed out to them ( such as a 7 year old worrying about her weight ) these shows that are supposed to be child friendly are just setting our future up for ignorance and distracting us from the bigger picture in life.
