Yes, I know that Anna Nicole Smith is dead, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a significant impact on politics. I know you're probably thinking, "How the hell is SHE related to politics?" I asked myself the same thing at first, but now I get it.
George Lakoff, author of books like "A Political Mind" and "Don't Think of an Elephant" explains the connection between Anna Nicole and current American politics.
According to Lakoff we all think in terms of narratives, American stories that have been laid out and ingrained into us based on our life experiences. He says that we assign these narratives to everyone in our lives subconsciously and that determines how we see people. And this makes so much sense.
Lakoff uses Anna Nicole to explain this phenomenon. Anna Nicole could be explained using several narratives: the gold digger, rags-to-riches, the American dream, or revising self perspective. Oddly enough these are the same narratives we use to gather opinions of politicians. McCain could be the war hero, Obama would be redefining self perspective, Clinton and Palin would be rags-to-riches or calculating bitch (take your pick). Either way, Lakoff's use of narratives to define perspective makes perfect sense. And who better to connect something so important to than Anna Nicole, someone with plenty of narratives themselves?
Vote for Anna Nicole
