Why do special needs people get special privilages?

Hi again. Im here to bring you another interesting question, "Why do people with special needs or mental deficancy get special privilages?". Now i ask this mainly because of the pure and simple fact that we are trying to teach some of these people with this kind of handicap to live (or at least be able to do simple tasks) in modern day society. Let me give you an example, As some of you know i go to a technical school and take the horticulture shop. We have just added a program in our school called Life Skills. This program is to induct special needs people into a shop out of the three academies we offer. Now our shop is for the life skills kids in the construction academy. Recently we had an incident where one of them threatened another life skills kids life. In our school we take that seriously and the normal punishment would be (for a normal student) 5-6 days Out of school suspension. The life skills kid that was threatening the others life....got 1 day internal suspension and just has a list of things he can no longer do. Now many of you at this point are thinking "Well he doesnt know any better" or "HE has a mental deficency that causes him to do this" my answer to you is this....giving them a slap on the wrist when special needs people act up is not a proper way to teach them in today's society. I say this because first it could start out as an idle threat on someones life and no one pays any mind because of his mental deficency, but what happens to them if they really do kill that person. Are we just going to send them to a judge where he says "Because of your handicap if you promise not to do it again we will let you go." . NO instead we send them to prison where they have no idea whats going on, or what might happen to them. Many of you are now saying "You have no idea what your talking about." . Oh really? I had a family friend who was mentally challenged and he was sent to prison because he had sex with a girl who was underaged, but told him she wasnt and consented to having sex with him. Once her parents found out they filed a law suit and he was sent to prison for 5 years because he didnt know any better. Now he was 19 and she was 16...only a measly 3 year difference but because he was sheltered from the world, he had no idea about the laws and the punishments that come with them. Now many of you are saying "Well Marcus didnt you just contradict yourslef there by saying he was sent to jail for 5 years?" Yes and no. I did contradict myself in the way where i said they get special privliages if they were menatally handicapped. No in the sense that since we shelter most of these people for their entire lives they don't know anymore about the laws of society then a 5 year old does. In conclusion i say this....Teach those who can't teach themselves about the rules, guidelines, and punishments of this world. For if they do not know or if they are babied, then they will never learn the difference between whats right and whats wrong.
