INJUSTICE Should Be the Name of My School Board

The School Board and School Superintendent in my county are as corrupt as a small-town cop. If you don't know already, just google Collier County School Board. It is amazing how the members of the school board can neglect their duty of serving their taxpayers and students, commit fraud, approve a salary and benefits for the superintendent that exceeds the Vice President of the United States's, refuse the teachers their guaranteed raises, privatize the janaterial services because they're in a budget crunch, AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

My superintendent is paid a base salary of $240,000 and it can never be reduced, no matter his performance at his job. He gets a raise every year, his raise being dependant on how much the Board approves for him. He gets reimbursed for traveling anywhere during the work day. He has a $400 allowance a month for 'business-related expenses.' He and his immediate family receive complete coverage on all vision, dental, and health insurance. He has a maximum of $100 grand for life insurance. He has MOVING expenses that in include $80 a day, and two months of living expenses. They pay for whatever techie toys his heart desires. All this while Collier County's teachers are living on a measly salary. I've tried to find the exact numbers, but all my local newspaper reports is that teachers are offered step increases, and were offered a 1% bonus last year while they were protesting. One percent.

How is this injustice allowed to continue? It might have something to do with our ultra-conservative tax base here in Collier County continuing to reelect these idiots on the School Board, or with Dennis Thompson (superintendent) playing puppeteer to the School Board while all of them are supposed to be serving the school system and the people. It might have to do with the fact that Thompson is a greedy, lying, son-of-a-bitch (you may think I'm going too far with the last statement, but check out Dennis Thompson's history, or the history of corrupt school boards and superintendents my county has had).

To top it all off, everytime our local newspaper reports anything suspicious or funky goin on up at the Taj Mahal (that's what we call the Admin building, because it's new and so big that there are two completely unused floors), the article always has some sort of statement from an Administrator that whatever information they have can't be released to the public. Are you kidding?? YOU SERVE THE PUBLIC! Anything they do up at the Taj Mahal is using taxpayer's money and we have the right to know what's going on. That building should be completely transparent.

The lesson to learn from my local goings-on is to pay more attention to what's going on in your community because there will always be people waiting to take hold of power and corrupt and abuse the system. Only the people, as a whole, can rise up and stop it.
